How do you get your protien?

Some folks prefer protein drinks. Some prefer protein supplements. Some prefer to just 'eat' their protein. What's your preference and what do you consume?

When I first had my surgery through DukeWLS, I had no choice but to consume protein drinks for 3.5 weeks. UGH!!! I honestly think if I ever see another BOOST or ENSURE I just might launch it at someone. I honestly, have tried a number of 'mixes', but never found one that I much liked.

I prefer to 'eat' my protein and find that if I follow the rule of eating my protein first, I can routinely get in at least 60 milligrams of protein a day.  Shrimp and seafood as a whole have always been an easy go to for me. Poultry was a little more hit and miss at first, but now that I'm nearly two years out, I can eat any meat and/or hard boiled eggs without any problem at all. The other easy go to item was and has been beans. Beans of all sorts. A a really safe bet when I'm out and about is Wendy's chili. If I'm at dinner or lunch and I'm out, I'll often select a spinach salad with grilled shrimp or chicken.

Milk is another easy go to, as is yogurt and cheese... I just have to keep an eye on the fat content and if I'm not careful lactose intolerance can raise it's head.

Sooooo... What do you like to eat to get in your protein?

Hello, Barbara,

I follow the protein first rule as well, and I add melted cheese to almost every meat...lol...for extra protein.  I do have a Pure Protein Chocolate Chip Cookie bar every morning for breakfast which gives me 20 grams of protein in a very small bar.  I, like you, cannot even stomach the idea of a protein shake, and I dump on every protein powder I have ever tried.  I hate it, but for some reason, I cannot handle those, and I have tried four.  I will not try another because dumping is horrible even though I really did want to make some of eggface's protein ice cream.  :(   Oh, well.  I will stick to meat, cheese, milk, and my Pure Protein bars.

I drink a protein shake every morning.
They are the kind I create in my bullet. The rest comes from meat, nuts and beans.
I don't like many of the protein bars or canned protein drinks.

I rarely use protein drinks, but I'll have to try one of "Ohh Yeah" drinks to see how it does.

Thanks for the tip!

Please check out the thread for this topic on the Loser's Bench Discussion Board and add your two cents.

Well, I prefer to eat mine.  I make sure I have protein at least 3/4 of each meal.  I eat 4 meals a day.  The other part is vegetables and sometimes potatoes.
My protein is from meat, cheese and peanut butter.

Barbara,
I drink Isopure protein powder, Click and I also like Nectar Roadside lemonade. I drink at least one protein drink everyday. Because I cannot eat all my protein.

I bought the book you recommended since I seem to be in a holding pattern with weight loss. I will start on it and try it and keep on chugging along and pray that i will get the rest of this weight off one day soon.

Thanks for your help.

Congratulations on doing the things you need to do to reap the greatest rewards you can on this journey... Realize that this is a lifelong journey, not one that really has an end... So keep chugging away.

I try to eat my protein as well but will sometimes get in a shake just for the ease of it.  When I was in a stall that was one thing that helped me - drinking a protein shake for breakfast.  I like to eat a protein bar for breakfast during the week since my mornings are very hectic and on the weekends I do scrambled eggs and ham or bacon.  I snack on almonds or yogurt and eat some kind of meat for lunch and dinner.  I do eat some veggies with my meal (just can't do without it - especially with summer coming).  Yesterday my hubby and I went out to eat after church (kids went home with mom) and we went to our favorite Chinese Bistro which also has some home cooking (I know - sounds wierd but it's the only restaurant in our town so they had to please everyone).  While my hubby went for his usual low-carb chicken and cabbage, I went for the Sunday special - turkey, dressing, 2 sides (chose mashed poatatoes and squash/zucchini), roll, cranberry sauce, banana pudding.  Needless to say I'm learning to ask for a box as soon as I order. I ate a piece of turkey with some mashed potatoes (seems to help it slide down a little easier) and some of the squash.  Took the rest to my mom's and told my dad he had dinner for one day this week.  It's so much easier when you and the one you're eating with want to eat the same thing - then you share.
