Post op hip pain
Hey everyone,
I'm 6mo out RNY and have been experiencing pain in both hips. I noticed it a couple of months ago and I thought it was because I'd slept on one hip to long. Now I'm noticing it in both hips. Its like they're sore... I never had this when I was 370#. It's very strange and does affect my gait until it passes. Usually its a couple of days but i was on the road for my job so its been a week now. Any ideas?

Tammy, YES! I am waking up during the night with hip pain. I toss and turn all night trying to alleviate the pain. I even lay on my back but then wake up with excruciating tailbone pain! If I lay on my tummy, I wake up with the sick heavy discomfort in my hernia! lol I can't win! Have you noticed the tailbone pain yet either? I Googled to try to find an explanation for it and found a post from OH.com on the men's forum that I'll clip and paste for you here:
"A plastic surgeon explained this really well to me a few weeks ago. He says that when we gain weight, there are certain areas that the muscle actually sits on top (or even in-between) layers of fat. One area is the abs and the other is the butt. So as our body expands, those muscles stretch and get pulled to their limits. But when we lose all the fat, they don't always (or ever, according to him) just "snap" back into place. So what we're left with are muscles that kinda droop or sag and don't sit on or around the bones in that area like they should (or used to). The only way to correct it for the abs is to have them tightened up (like a corset) and pulled back together. For the butt, it's tougher and it usually involves a lift of some sorts and possibly implants."
I'm wondering if this explanation for the tailbone wouldn't also apply to the hips? All I know is that my tailbone pain came first with the hip pain soon to follow. I was browsing the other posts and read about cortizone shots, donut cushions to sit on, physical therapy, exercises, etc. I hope you find some type of relief and if/when you do, please share it with us!

You know Shauna as i think about it the booty bones did make me aware of their presence a while ago. I attributed it to not feeling so great so i was sitting around alot. I figured i was just wearing what little butt i had out- i was not blessed with butt, its always been flat so i didnt have much cushion to start
I'm not much of a back sleeper so my hips are getting a run for it. Maybe its time to strap on some hip pads- time to get creative with the sewing machine and a glue gun

Shauna,
Thanks for the info... I thought it was just me. I have been having tailbone, hip, thigh pain since WLS.... Soooo now what to do with it. I wake up with pain and toss and turn also. I have bursitis in my shoulders and thought it was some arthritis in my hips also... hmmm, I'll have to look into this more.
Thanks for the info!

Hi Tammy,
Please contact your dr. I think that the hip pain my be related to your weight loss and the redistribution of your weight and change in your gait, but I'd have it checked out.

I am so glad I was checking this sight out! My husband just interviewed for a job in Durham. For the last month my hips have been hurting. I too thought it was from sleeping wrong. I am even finding myself trying to walk differently in order to stop the pain. Its comforting to know that it is not just my quarky body! :)
Welcome to my world... of hip pain, that is. Before my surgery, which was 4 1/2 months ago, I had mild to moderate pain in my hips from osteoarthritis. I controlled my pain pretty well with NSAIDs, but of course, I couldn't continue to take NSAIDs after surgery. About 2 months after my surgery, my hip pain started getting bad, really BAD. I could hardly walk. Eventually I had to have a cortisone injection in my hip to withstand the severe pain. That worked great! It took almost all my pain away, but I know it's only temporary. In a few months the pain will be back and I'll have to have another injection. The injection didn't hurt at all though. As soon as the majority of my excess weight is gone I'm headed for a hip replacement.
