Lactose Intolerant?
Hi everyone. I just have a quick question. How does someone know if they are lactose intolerant? I only ask this because today when I made one of my protein shakes, I used skim milk. After I got done drinking it, OMGoodness, I felt like crap. My stomach hurt and I felt like just going and laying down. If I am lactose intolerant, does that mean I can't eat cheese anymore? I sure hope not because I absolutely love cheese.
Ok well thanks in advance for all of the replies. Lets hope tomorrow I can get this trach out so I can actually talk..lol Take care everyone!!

I was nearly devastated post-op. I drank about a half a gallon of milk a day for the last 18 years. My parents wouldn't let me have as much as I wanted, there were 5 kids so a gallon of milk only lasted a day anyway. Oh, the limitations!!! hehe. Once I went to college I started drinking skim milk and have drank that since.
About 203 weeks post-op I tried milk and I got cramps, gas and it went through me in about 30-45 minutes. But, I was eating cottage cheese, cheese, other dairy stuff and had no problems. So I did not have any protein shakes for several months.
I started out trying skim, then 2%, then whole, then goats milk, then acidophillus (however that one is spelled), powdered milk, soy, rice and a few milk substitutes from the local health food store. Nothing worked.
I still cannot drink milk like I used to because it tears me up inside. I have a glass of milk every night after supper and it seems to 'stay in' longer, a couple hours but it still comes flying out. I have 12 ounces of skim milk with my protein 30 minutes after supper and that is the only time of day I have milk normally because I do get gas and a little cramping from it but it seems as if taking it after a meal makes it so the cramps are tolerable. I need milk and protein so I have it knowing what is going to happen.
OK, so now that was my experience, now to try and answer your question. Do you get the same results when you eat cheese or other dairy products? I asked my surgeon and he said I can be milk intolerant but okay with other dairy products because the way the body processes milk.
I would say try soy or something else and do a little experimentation on your own and see if it is just cows milk or any kind of milk.
Good Luck!!!

I was for awhile, but it's resolved itself unless I drink a ton or have a large quantity of ice cream (which isn't terribly likely these days).
WHat you are describing is how I felt. Go to the grocery store and get a carton of lactaid and drink it plain. If you don't have issues with that, then you are lactose intolerant. Look for protein drinks made with whey protein ISOLATE as that does not contain any lactose.

I remember that feeling after making a protien drink with milk.
I felt like crap and normally would have to lie down for 30 minutes and was good to go after that.
From what I understand cottage cheese yogurt and cheese have a different process than milk.
Lactaid is really not bad and I have no problem with that product.

As for ice cream cant do it and I stay far away from it

Emelinda, I'm so sorry to hear you are having this problem. Another suggestion is soy milk and or rice milk as they are both lactose free. I use unsweetened soy milk myself and I love it.
Good luck on getting your trach removed tomorrow! I bet you'll be so glad to have your voice back! At least we don't need that to communicate here on the internet, right?!
