OT: Still can't sleep...

Hey ya'll...

I know I haven't been online lately but life has been crazy for me, even more than usual... lol!  I think about you all the time and say a prayer for those going into surgery, just getting out of surgery and well just everyone...  I hope you're all doing well!   Ok, just a quick update...  Work is work, still on nights (12-hour shifts), still working and not sleeping much (my body doesn't like sleeping during the daytime).  I've tried all kinds of relaxation techniques, vitamins and now OTC pills and Ambien (regular and CR)...  I guess I just have too much energy or something,  I need an on/off switch.  The OTC pills work for a bit, I usually get about 4 hours of sleep before tossing and turning and not being able to go back to sleep.  Since this wasn't working so well I went to my General Doctor and she gave me samples of Ambien.  The first time I took it I slept sooooo well and thought FINALLY, this is what sleep feels like!!!!  I was so excited.  Then day #2 it didn't work so well, 5 or 6 hours then the tossing and turning started again.  Oh, and when I do take any sleeping pills I wake up with a terrible headache and diarrea (however it's spelled... ugh).  This past weekend was my 3 night working weekend and always the worst for sleeping.  I am sooo frustrated and I don't know what to do next...  Any suggestions are very very appreciated!

Hugs,

Sheryl

Hi Sheryl,
Not sleeping well is the pits to say the least.
I have done the Ambien too along with benedryl ect...
Some nights I sleep great some nights I dont.
My problem with sleeping is because I am in perimenapause.
I did read the other day that if you drink 1oz of pure cherry jucie with water it has the purest form of meletonin.
So I have been trying that the past two nights and it seems to help.
My energy level is through the roof these days which is wonderful and at night I would think I would sleep great.
I hope you find some answers and if you find something to help you please let me know.

Thanks Annie,

I will keep you posted if I find anything.  I just got some Cherry juice and will try it.  I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago so I was thrown into menapause, it does change EVERYTHING for sure.  My thoughts are with you girl!  If you start having problems with moodiness, go get some progestrone cream... it's done wonders for me.

I must say I havent had any moods swings maybe some would tell you other wise.
I feel as my self esteem gets better I am able to say what is on my mind.
I tried the cream mainly for the hot flashes and night sweats I did not see much of a difference.
So far if I take black cohosh every day twice a day my hot flases dont seem to be as bad and my night sweats arent as bad.
I will be glad when it is over.
Loved you telling about walking to the refridgerator LOL making sure everything was in order.
Let me know about how you do with the cherry juice?
I read about this in Womans World Magazine the other dayI think it was this months issue.
Tell Rex to get you one at FL they are up at the cash registars.

After surgery I started sleep walking with Ambien.  I have switched to Lunesta.  It does not work as well but I get about 5.5 hours of sleep a night.  I have a documented sleep disorder where I don't cycle through my REM sleep like I should.  Maybe a sleep study is in order for you.

You know, now that you mention it - I didn't believe it but Rex did say that I was sleep walking the other night (he followed me).  He said I walked to the refrigerator, opened it up and looked inside.  I didn't take anything out, just looked inside, mumbled something, then went back to bed.  lol!

Maybe I do need a sleep study, I didn't have one prior to my WLS (over 6 years ago they didn't do that).

Anyway, guess Ambien is out the door now.  I don't want to be sleep walking.  And I really don't like the headaches...

Take care!

I suffer from anxiety and PTSD. For these reasons I cannot lay down like a normal person and go to sleep. My mind keeps racing round and round and never shuts down. Because of this, I have to take perscribed sleeping pills. I took Ambien for a long time and then my body stopped responding to it. I now take a pill called Temazapam that is JUST for people that have sleeping problems or do weird shift work like you do. If I do not take the Temazapam I get really bad sleep and then my next day is ruined. I dont care what anyone says about taking pills long term... I need them and I need my sleep. I would discuss it with your doctor and tell them that the Ambien didnt do anything for you and that you need your sleep. I would also tell them about your side effects. I hope you get some shut eye, I truly know how awful it is to try and sleep and toss and turn.

Thanks for the info and the hug Darcie, I have an apointment next week and I will be having a serious talk with her.  I don't see an end to working dayshift any time soon unless I were to get another job.  And in this economy I don't see that happening.  I want to stay in the Federal system since I already have time in.  Ok, I'll mention Temazapam to my doc and tell her about all the side effects I'm getting from the ambien and OTC stuff.  I think I'm going to drink something tonight...  knock myself out, under the table... lol!  Yeah right, I am a lightweight bigtime, I'd probably only have to drink one shot and be done... lol!

Ok, I hope all is well with you.  Seems like forever since I saw you guys last.

Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Sheryl - I hated night shift for that reason - I just couldn't get any sleep on days.

With Ambien, sometimes it helped me to break the pill in half, take half (it knocked me out just as well as a whole one), and then when I woke up four hours later, I took the other half.  Seemed even with their controlled release, it released all at once, I got four or five heavy hours of sleep, then was wide awake.  Taking half then later another half helped - just make sure you have a good block of time to sleep twice ;)

Kristen,

I didn't think you could break them in 1/2 since they're controlled released... hmmm...  I'll have to think about that one.  Sounds like a good plan though.  Before I had my WLS I could work nights and not have a problem sleeping during the day, but I have a lot more energy now for sure.  Just can't seem to shut my brain off...  I'm going to talk with my doc and see what she says also...  Thanks for the suggestion!
