I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Licensed Clinical Addiction Speacialist and have been facilitating addictions groups for years.

I'd like to get a support group going in my area, Asheville/Western NC, not to be the expert, but because I need support!

A free group,  for all of us no matter what type of surgery we've had.

If folks show interest, I'll try and find a space for us to meet. I'm thinking weekly/bi-weekly.

This surgery did not cure my food addiction and I need to address that before I sabotage the surgery.

Anyone interested?

HEy I work in Asheville. I had lap band surgery on 1/22 and yesterday I had to have my gallbladder removed. You know there is a support group thru Mission on the first Tuesday of the month.  You have to call 213-1111 and register and they will tell you where the group is. You might be interested in that group until you could get one started.

I might be interested. Would just have to see when everyone can meet. I had my surgery at Hickory Surgical.

Yea, I'vebeen to that goup and I don't really consider it support... it's more like "take 30 minutes to introduce everybody and then 30 minutes to split into your specific surgery and chat" group.

There's no facilitator for each mini-group and some peole talk wayyyyyy too much and other's not at all.

There's no therapy going on, and very little support unfortunately. Plus, with about 50 people showing up and one staff member... well... how are we supposed to get to know one another? It's to large and different people show up each time.

I'd like to start up a serious support group, where the same people come often and we can get to know each other's triggers, etc and really support one another.

Thanks for letting me know about it, but as the "only game in town", Mission's "support" gathering is not enough!

I'll PM you if enough people respond to start a group, glad you might be interested!

I go to the Raileigh meet up each month and the support group through my hospital/surgeon's practice in Greensboro. How far is ashville from Greensboro and what day of the week are you thinking of having it on? I like to do these things on the weekends.

I'd be willing to attend a support group in Asheville, I live out toward Leicester.  I get discouraged when I go to support groups because EVERY TIME there's a few people who HOG all the time talking and other say nothing.  I'd be interested in a meeting every two weeks.  You can PM me if you want to carry this out.

Hi Ann,

Raleigh is really far from us! I wish you were closer, but its seriously hours in the car.

Mspppants,
I'll keep checking this thread and PM once we get enough folks! Thanks and I agree with you about needing a group where everyone gets some time,

it is a 3 to 3/12 hour drive from Greensboro to Asheville. You might look into the Raliegh group that Barbara is talking about.

we are way too far away. All of us are in Western North Carolina that live in Asheville or the surrounding counties.
