How many protein shakes?
Hi everyone. I have a quick question. I have not had my surgery yet but I am starting to drink the protein shakes so I get use to it. My question is, how many shakes am I suppose to drink a day? Right now I have samples from a few friends from this site but I am clueless as to how many I should be drinking. Also, when I drank a protein shake the other day, the first one to be exact, I was not hungry for hours which is awesome because I am trying to lose weight before the surgery. Is that normal to not be hungry for a few hours or so after drinking one? I drank it around like noon or 1pm and I was not hungry again until about 5 or 6pm. Honestly, I loved the feeling of not being hungry and actually being full..lol.
Ok well thanks in advance for the info everyone.. :)

Hello Emelinda! Good morning to you!
You doctors office should advise on how many grams of protein you should have per day.
Post surgery I was getting in 90-95 g per day. That took 3 shakes per day.
I am 3 weeks out from VSG surgery now. I have to get a min of 60g per day. I get that in 2 shakes per day and try to get in more.
I make my shakes with skim milk and protein powder. Make sure to count the protein in the milk when adding up the grams. My protein powder has 24g per scoop and 1 cup of skim milk has 8 g so I get 32 grams in one shake.
Glad you're getting started on your protein! It is so very important!
Good luck!

The other poster is right. your doctor should advise you on how much protein you should have per day. Be careful to not get in too much protein, it can potentially dehydrate you and after surgery that would be bad.
As for the fullness, yes that is normal. Protein and fiber will make you feel full. Try adding a little benefiber to your protein shakes. In total we should be getting around 25g of fiber a day. This really does help with the feeling full along with the protein
Also you could try : Tropicana Light & Healthy OJ (very low sugar - all natural) 1 cup, 1 cup of frozen fruit (Banana/ strawberries or dole mixed, like peaches, pineapple, strawberries) and 1 scoop of protein powder
I've got a texture problem with food, so there are a lot of fruits and veggies I don't like becuase of texture. While I don't technically need the protein powder anymore (I get enough in my diet), I still drink a protein shake made with fruit every single day. That way I get in at least 2 of my 5 servings of fruit along with the fiber fruit provides. THis is my breakfast everyday

Before my surgery I drank Adkins shakes every morning. That was part of my plan to lose weight before surgery. Two weeks before surgery I had to do a liquid diet that was all protien shakes, prescribed by the surgeon. After surgery I had a few ounces of protein shake every day as I healed, but once I started solid foods I was taken off protein drinks entirely.
Ask you nutritionist what they recommend.

I am a year out and I still have a minimum of 2 shakes a day - I love the taste, it helps get in much needed fluid and it helps get in my personal goal of 100 grams or more a day of protein. I look forward to my shakes, and the chocolate ones are like dessert to me. There's no way I can meet my protein goals on food alone. My food protein is just cream on top of the other protein I take in from shakes, greek yogurt mixed with protein powder and protein bullets.
Good luck

Thanks for all of the information everyone. I called the surgeons office today but they have not gotten back to me so I am hoping they call me tomorrow. I think I am going to drink one protein shake in the morning, one for lunch and then eat a regular supper, but jus****ch the portions that I eat. I am really getting excited and everytime the phone rings during the day I always hope that it is the surgeons office telling me that I am approved. I know one day soon that will happen and you guys will be the 2nd ones to know. I will of course tell my husband first..lol You guys are great and I thank you all for the support I recieve here on this forum. Thank you all sooooo much!!!!!
