OT Update on Deb_M and Baby Maya
As you know, we all 'do this' for a myriad of reasons. Deb's 'reason' was the miracle of baby Maya. In late December, at 22 weeks, Deb's amniotic sac ruptured causing a sustained leak. In late January, Maya was delivered by C-Section at about 27 weeks weighing in at a tiny 1 lb 8 ounces.
I saw Deb yesterday at a baby shower. OMG, that little girl has already has a FULL closet! LOL
Deb looks wonderful and seems to have fully recovered from the C-Section delivery of tiny little Maya. She brought a beautiful photo of Maya... Even so tiny, she's a really beautiful little girl, but then those who have met Deb and Ryan know why... That little apple didn't fall too far from the tree.
Maya is making fabulous progress. She's graduated from the critical care NICU to secondary care level where the number of nurses to babies is slightly reduced. She's up to 3 lbs now. While I know that is still incredibly small, she's nearly doubled her birth weight and that's wonderful news. She's started nursing from a bottle. Babies that are this prematures literally have to learn to suck, swallow and breath at the same time, but it looks like she's getting down and that's a major step towards being able to come home. She also is starting to be able to maintain her body temperature which is another critical progress milestone. She used to have a 'heated' isolette, now her isolette just has ambient room temperature and the heat she generates. The next step is to move her to an open basinette, and that should be happening soon. Deb said that she is bathed in the little wash bins that the hospital uses to bathe patients bedside, but of course she is fully in the washbin and they have dubbed it her first 'spa tub.' She now is able to wear little tiny premie clothes and after yesterday, she's got a full on WARDROBE! Maya is also showing developmental progress. She recognizes and is soothed by her mother's presence and is already a Daddy's Girl as she lights up when she recognizes when Ryan comes and reads to her.
Deb wants everyone to know that she truly appreciates everyone's thoughtful kindness, love and prayers. She's putting me on her email distribution and I'll post updates as I get them.
