Congrats on the 15 lbs lost! Liquid diets are hard!
Abby needs to take Calcium CITRATE not carbonate. Caltrate is a brand name. Wrong stuff for malabsorptive WLS.
1500-2000g a day w/ D-3 (400IU) Calcium Citrate at least 2 hrs apart in doses of 500g per dose. More than that, and it is wasted. Even normal gutted people can't absorb more than 500g at a pop.
It is also recommended to take 2 adult multivitamins a day, not just one. I take Centrum chewables. I thought of going to the Silvers too since the amounts of vitamins are more, but it is lacking Vit K. (which helps blood clotting, so is probably why it is not in the silvers)

Annie,
On your labs, how was your PTH level? Did it rise/high? You see, unless you have a bone scan, this level is the only one that is reliable as an indicator of your calcium levels. The standard test of "blood calcium" that is routinely drawn to check always reads good! The reason for that is that our bodies will leach/rob/steal from our bones to keep this calcium blood levels up where they need to be.
THAT is scary to me! It is one of worst misguided advice we get from our surgeons and nuts! Tums (calcium carbonate) and Flinstone vitamins don't cut it!
You don't really specify which calcium you are taking, but Viactive calcium chews are the wrong calcium. We require Calcium Citrate, 1500-2000mg a day, with doses of no more that 500 at a shot....so 3-4 times a day space no closer than 2 hrs.
Sorry to sound preachy, but I read too often that people are supplementing wrong, and there is no turning back with the damage if it is done.....

Hi Abby!
Below is what I take everyday, since day one out of the hospital. I do not like to take pill forms personally, since I have seen pills when I had normal guts come out whole in my stool. No more acid to breakdown either anymore. I like the fact that by either taking liquid, chewable, or crushing, that when it hits my intestines, it is ready to be absorbed. Also don't want any stuck problems either with my stoma or something that may or may not cause an ulcer from too prolonged contact.
Daily:
Multivitamin -2 Centrum Chewables after meal. Purchase regular store
Calcium Citrate 2000 mg (4 x a day / 500mg w/400iu D3 1 tbls dose) liquid NOW Cal-Mag
4 X a day
I mail order from netrition www26.netrition.com/now_liquid_cal_mag.html $4.95 flat UPS shipping.
I found to be the cheapest, only 1 tbls vs others that have you take 2 or more. There is another brand, blue bonnet that is equivalent.
B-12 sub-lingual - 1000 mcg cyanocobalamin (GNC liquid dropper) but have dots too. (Walmart)
Biotin 600mg (crush) (GNC pills) you can get anywhere. Hair, nails
B Complex ( liquid: World Organic Ultra-B 1 tbls a day) Local source @ about $15 for 32 servings but tastes great if you like raisins. GNC has a good B complex pill form too.
D-3 5000 IU (liquid dropper NOW brand or pills crushed)
Iron -Vitron-C(ferrous Fumerate 200mg w/Vit C 125mg) before bed on empty stomach. No calcium, milk, caffeine 2 hrs prior. I crush this one pretty small pill. The ferrous Fumerate is a mild constipator I was told vs the others.
Colace stool softner 250mg 2x a day ( Docusate Sodium-high dosage pill instead of taking many smaller doses-softgel am/pm) Milk of Magnesium if bound up. Constipation is a given with surgery. Fiber helps a lot too.
I crush all pills (biotin/iron) except the colace, my pouch tolerates it.
Make sure all is labeled in elemental units or states "as" or "from" in their ingredients list. Watch for the dosage amounts when figuring out your schedule, or if it is a bargain or not!
When traveling and don't want liquids, I have pill forms and crush/swig with crystal lite.
Also heard on this forum that the standard B-12 (cyanocobalamin) may not bring up the labs if you are low....to take the methylcobalamin type.
Found a source for it: http://www6.netrition.com/now_brain_b12.html
Remember, this is a malabsorbative surgery! That is why there are so many to take and more often. We have to make up for what is passed right on through our stools. The main area of vitamin absorption (duodenum) in our intestines has been mostly bypassed! RNY and DS (even more supplimentation needed)
PLEASE take it seriously and sorry, the surgeons and nuts in general aren't up to snuff here. They tell us to take tums and flinstones because of financial reasons!! They have to generalize and the philosophy is that is better than nothing and every pocketbook! AND, If it doesn't taste good, patients won't take it. UGH! All this may not taste or be convenient to me, I look at it as medicine! Suck it up and take it! LOL
