How have other people handled WLS surgery in the work place???

I work with 5 other women - and we're all very close so I told them from the very beginning. They knew when I started exploring the options and have been a tremendous support system for me. BUT I'm a very open person about anything and everything that's going on in my life.

The first people I told about it were my kids and my Mom after that no one's opinion really mattered to me. But again - that's just how I am.

Who to tell and how to tell it is very personal - because we spend so much time with our work families you need to educate them in case of an emergency at the very least.

Good Luck!!

I hadn't decided initially what I was going to say about it. Then I received a fax from my doctor that I needed to give to my company. It stated that I was having surgery. Since it happened so close to Christmas, and my surgery date was only 3 weeks out once I got it, my work wanted something showing that I did need the time off. Holidays are hard. Well, it didn't state what the surgery was but it was sent from a Bariactric Center. Gig was up and they all knew. Now it is fine. They have all been so supportive. There was NO negative remarks at all. Today is my b-day and I received a gift card for Lane Bryant's from my co-workers. I have lost so far 78 lbs and my closet is getting more and more empty so this is a great gift. For me, having them know has been so much easier.

Hello JoJo~
First of all it is nice to meet you I am lucky enough to work at home so I do not have to play office politics anymore (thank god!) I know what it is like to be private and want to keep things to yourself. When I went to the weight loss seminar almost two years ago I heard over and over *you are not big enough for surgery* or *you must be post op* My BMI was 38 and I had high blood pressure and Metabolic Syndrome *X* (just love that name!) I wish you the BEST BEST of luck and you will be soooo happy you did this. Stick with your other ladies that you call friends, as they will be the glue that holds this together for you You owe NO ONE a explanation on why you are having surgery, this is YOUR business!!! best of luck.

Thanks everyone for sharing. It really helps to know that everyone that has WLS has similar issues and its as unique as who we are. I will keep everyone in the loop on how I share my journey and  how others react!!!!
