Don't lose more pre-op?

OK today was my last appointment with the NUT for my 6 month weight management that was required by my insurance.  I have been approved and my surgery is scheduled for 5-25.  They put my BMI on the insurance docs as what I initially started the 6 mo plan which was 44, I have lost almost 40 lbs and my BMI is 37.8 or so.  The NUT told me to maintain the weight I have now because they will weight me at the hospital and if my BMI is 35 or less they will not perform the surgery.  This seems really strange so I asked my Surgeons nurse and she disagrees with the NUT.  The NUT wants me to maintain because she knows I will lose weight on the 2 week liquid diet.  Anyone heard of someone being turned down after the approval because they lost to much weight because of the 2 week liquid diet or 6 mo weight management?

Thanks,
Sandy

Hi Sandy,

Congratulations on your weight loss. You are doing a great job! I also lost before my surgery while on my 6 month documented weight loss. My bmi was around where yours is when I had my surgery or slightly lower. Check with your Dr. because mine didn't require me to do a 2 week fast before surgery because the reason they have you do it is to shrink your liver and since I had already lost weigh and was continuing to lose, he fel that my liver would be in good shape ... and it was. I was not weighed the day of surgery. I was weighed at my preop appoint the week before, but they used my start weight when I started the program and that was the weight that was used for the insurance approval. They told me that once it was approved, it was approved. Check with the insurance specialist with your surgeon's office and with your insurer.

Thanks Barbara that is kind of what I thought and did not want to start eating more now because it will just make it harder on me for the liquid diet and after the surgery.  I will contact my Dr just to make sure thanks again for the advise.

Hi Sandy,

I had my initial visit with Dr. Chapman about 3 weeks ago.  I am almost finished with my 3 month diet/excercise required by my insurance.  my bmi is about 36,2.  Dr. Chapman told me he did not want me to lose anymore weight ......... i was floored!  i am told that the insurance company will look at the latest weight and bmi.  i have never in my life been told NOT to lose any more weight!  i haven't seen the nut yet.   my appointment is on april 7th.  after that, i will be ready to submit for approval.  will be interesting to see what happens.
let us know what you discover on your journey!

thanks,
dee

Dee, what is funny is I am already approved.  When I asked Dr Kuwada what they would do he said they submitted when I came into the practice in the first place.  I was just suprised when the NUT told me they check at the hospital and if I am to low they will refuse to do the surgery.  Of course she is the NUT on the medical side and not the surgery side so I still want to talk to my surgeon on what I need to do.  I guess if he wants me to maintain I will I just think it is strange since I could get more weight off before surgery.  Anyway thanks for responding and good luck with your approval.
