still eating to fast

I have to weigh myself on Monday. That is the only time I do it. After last week's success story, I am afraid that I won't have lost any. I keep thinking it will be time for a stall after losing 9 lbs in one week. That was so friggin awesome! Tomorrow is 3 months for me. I still haven't learned my lesson though. Tonight for dinner I had a tiny piece of veggie pizza on thin crust. It was a smidgen bigger than the size of a saltine. Then I ate a small shrimp. MY husband said "Look at you go!" It was then I realized that I had eaten that all very quickly. The next thing I knew, I was in the bathroom getting sick. It came on very quickly and I felt immediately better. Will I ever learn to eat more slowly?

Oh, Sandy, I'm so sorry you're having problems.  I have noticed that when I don't concentrate on my eating I also tend to eat faster, take bigger bites, and don't chew enough.  Luckily I haven't thrown up or gotten sick yet.  I have had a few times when I felt like food was stuck though.  I just had to give it time to go down.  I have learned that I need to focus on my eating when I eat.  Sitting with my fellow teachers for lunch chatting while eating is a bad thing.  I get distracted by the conversation and lose track of my eating.  Any distraction is bad.  I do a lot better eating by myself with no distractions.  Maybe that would help you too.

I too notice that with people and other distactions I don't do as well. After yesterdays event, my husband says he will remind me if he sees me doing it. He thought he was. I told him it was just too late by the time he did yesterday. ugh. I did much better at breakfast.

Hi Sandra,

You have so much more restraint than I... I used to hop on and off that darn scale 10 times a day... Okay, maybe that's exagerating a bit... but somedays I'm pretty sure it was accurate. It nearly drove me nuts until I started just 'charting' the weight on anniversary day of my surgery. My deal with myself was that I could get on and off the darn thing as much as I wanted, but not to pay much attention to it except once a week. That helped me... Sounds like you are ahead of the curve figuring that out!

Re: eating to fast, too much... etc. It really is a learning thing and you are still very early. Will you ever learn. Yes, but it will take time. With time you will learn the size of our pouch a little better and as the swelling goes down and your pouch size enlarges a bit, you won't be quite as restricted. Right now, you probably have a window of one or two bites than can 'send you over the edge.' Also, realize that the nerves in your pouch are probably still healing, so you might not be getting the signal quite as clearly now as you will as your pouch heals and matures. Later, the 'tolerance' won't be so tight, but you will have learned to slow down and read the signals your body is sending most of the time ;-)

I have to admit to still have to 'learn' up to through my first anniversary... not nearly as often, but I'd still get caught short now and then. Now, I have to say that I can't really remember the last time I ate myself sick.

It will get better. I promise.

I had to have restraint with weighing myself. I was getting depressed when days at a time would go by with no change. I seriously either angry or depressed. It saved my mind weighing only once a week.
As for eating too fast, I hope you are right and I do get better at it. I did notice that I do eat less when I eat more slowly. By the time I am ready for my last coulple of bites, I realized I am content with my food amount. I suppose that is the same thing as being full. To me in the past, being full was over full and I am not sure what just full is like.

It's a learning process and to be honest, what seems just right at one meal, might seem like too much at the next... even with the same thing. Just keep working on it. You'll eventually learn that it's not your eyes that dictate the right volume, but your sense of fullness and it sounds like you are beginning to learn that fullness doesn't mean overful... If you overfill the pouch, you know what happens.

Keep up the good work.

Darcie,

Thanks for making me feel better. If a skinny mini can still mess up, I won't be huge forever because of it alone.

Eating too fast is a hard thing for me to control as well. I am sure it stems from childhood and competition for what will be left for seconds etc in my case. I came from a large family. But like everyone else says I just have to pay attention and try to remember to chew thoroughly. That helps me to slow down and keeps me out of trouble with the bean.

I don't have the excuse of a big family and fighting to get my share. I just inhaled food. I think when I ate it quickly no one realized just how much food I took in. No one really thought I was such a big eater. I knew though.
