Help Undecided
If you are still questioning which route to go I would recommend talking with Dr. Mitchell again to review the pros and cons of each procedure. I had RNY surgery with Dr. Mitchell 18 months ago, and I remember well going through the different procedures with him. I had a starting BMI of 46 and was around 42 at the time of surgery. I had considered Lapband, but chose to go the RNY route for a couple of reasons, partly though because the weight loss tended to be greater and faster, and I knew my eating habits would make lapband harder as I would be able to cheat easier if I went that route. I don't regret my decision at all. I'm not as familiar with the gastric sleeve. I can tell you that you couldn't be in better hands with Dr. Mitchell and his team though!
Hi Genna,
Please know that one surgery does not fit all. Thank goodness that there are so many options for us so that we can find the solution that best meets our physical needs and our lifestyles. While the lapband is a wonderful solution for many, it doesn't suit everyone. To be honest, it was what I initially considered myself, but after consulting with my physician, a lot of research and other medical considerations, I decided that another surgery was a better option for me. I would seriously consider the input from your surgeon. To be honest, especially when they do multiple types of surgery, they are less likely to be 'biased' and will tell you what they think will work best for you and why. I also followed up the information I gathered from my surgeon with my own research and talking to my other Dr's. When it was all said and done, I have to say that I'm very happy with the decision that I've made. One of the things I did was create a list of the pro's and con's for each surgery type for myself. As I looked at it in black and white, it helped me make my decision.
Wishing you all the best,
Barbara

I chose to go with the lapband and have loved it. I eat in volume and knew that this was one way not to overdo it. I started out with diabetes and hypertension, too. Now I am off my diabestes meds and blood pressure meds. My A1C is 5.7 now. So it can be done with the lapband.
Also my triglycerides were always super high, my last labs showed my triglycerides are now 180 and my cholesterol is 140.... My PCP said he had not ever seen me looking so good.
I say keep researching and talk to your doctor again.

A good friend of mine had the Lap band and has lost over 100 lbs since June last year, she had a BMI around 50, she still has more to lose and will lose once she gets passed all the stresses she is going thru right now in her life. (but she is not gaining so it is all good). I wanted to have the lap band and my BMI was lower, my surgeon did not feel where I was at and medical history that would be a good option for me. I did look into the sleeve but my insurance would not cover it and I do not have the money to self pay so I am scheduled for RNY on 5-25 and truly excited to get started on my journey. I think you need to talk to your surgeon and do a lot of research on all the different types of surgery and then also verify what insurance will and won't pay for. Good Luck with your research.
