My NUT says I can switch to Citrcal Petites but I just tasted the Caltrate 600+D in fruit flavors and I loved them.  Any reason why I can't have those instead?  And.. how many petites do you take compared to the Caltrate?

I have never taken the caltrate-but I do take the Citrical Petities-2 in the morning and 2 at night right before bed.  If the Nut said to switch I would switch-always take your vitamins-for it will show later down the road-ex.. people having teeth problems due to not taking calcium earlier on and your body taking it from your teeth and bones.  so just do what the nut asked and you should be fine!  Continued success with her new life!!

Can you explain what wrong kind of calcium means?  I had no idea there was a difference.

These people here are very informative!!!   RNY pts need Calcium Citrate.. something about the way we absorb it.  Citracal is Calcium Citrate.  Caltrate.. is Calcium Carbonate which we don't absorb.   Very important!!!

THANKS!  Yes, this is very important, I had no idea.  I'm about 5 months out and I could be taking the wrong kind.

I was taking the wrong kind!  I was taking Os-Cal which is calcium carbonate.  Thanks for letting me know what to look for.

To go a bit more indepth...

Calcium carbonate requires a fairly high amount of acid in the system to break into the components needed for absorption.  RNY and DS patients do not have nearly enough gastric juices in order to get the full (if much at all) benefit of carbonate for this reason.

Just as an aside, calcium citrate, which has an acidic compnent to the molecule, was created primarily for those of the older generation years ago.  As people age (in regards to normal tummies), acid production decreases tremendously, which meant even normies down the road were getting less and less from their calcium supplements.  Thus calcium citrate was mass-marketed.  Of course, it helps us, as well as others with similar conditions, as well.

If you can find calcium malate, it would be an excellent choice as well.  However, it's not readily available, and is very expensive from the sites I have seen it.
