Hi All
I had my RNY lap on Monday and am quite miserable.  The pharmacy lost my pain medication and now they are trying to locate it so I have been taking childrens liquid motrin.
The right side incision is so uncomfortable and swollen I almost yell when I have to lie down.
I have had hardly any sleep.
I cannot eat as absolutely everything taste horrible.
I drink alot of water and try to walk as much as I can.
I have this nagging little dry cough that makes me hurt but I think it is probably just allergies.
I hate to be the one that is not the strong little soldier, but pain and misery has been all I have had since surgery on Monday morning.

Any advice on how to make it through the first week?

Things get better i promise. I think we all go through the first week blues, of what the hell was i thinking. It's no cake walk thats for sure, then one morning you wake up about two weeks out and  its like the sun is shinning down on you. WOW it is all worth it.. I could tell you from experince, that i really don't think i at anything that first week, maybe a bit or two of  S/F Jello.. I didn't drink near enough water, just from being so darn weak, and vitimans really went out the window for almost a month.. YIKES!!! But once you get to feeling good your going to think back and be like oh hell yeah it was all worth it. when you see your body start to transform yup...
I'm sorry your don't have your pain meds, if it is the gas pain you have, it won't help just helps you take a cat nap at the least..
I know its hard just keep your chin up and don't get down.. Things will get better...
Take care

I am one week ahead of you . First things first don't try to lay flat try sleeping in a recliner.  As for the food everything I smelled make me want to puke orange Popsicles were my friend.  I have now advanced to mashed potatoes and they taste like a gourmet meal.  As for the sore side this too will lighten with each day , I am still a little sore but nothing like it was.  Good luck and hang in there .

You might want to call your surgeon office.  I didn't think Motrin adult or child is allowed!!!

You may want to call your surgeon.  My understanding is nothing but Tylenol is allowed.   Better check!

Desi,

Contact your Dr asap. You are not supposed to be taking any NSAIDS including ibuprofen aka Motrin. You should only be taking tylenol or acetomenphen OTC pain meds. Your Dr may Rx something stronger for you, but it won't be an NSAID.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are struggling so and hope that you get some relief soon.

Things will get better soon. One of my incisions hurt a litle more than the others. Do check with Dr. about pain meds. Tylenol or prescription from Dr. is what we are allowed. You do not want an ulcer. I slept in the recliner for a week or more. Lying flat does hurt. The cough could be from the tube they put down your throat for surgery.....that too will pass. The first 2 weeks is the hardest. You will adjust to it all. Good Luck and congratulations on your surgery.

Thank you all so much for your replys they have been a big help.  Actually I had called my surgeons nurse to explain about the prescription being lost and asked her if she could tell me something over the counter I could take "now" and she was the one that said children's liquid motrin.  She repeated it several times over and told me to call them back if CVS didn't locate the prescription.  Well CVS is still playing dumb about it all.  I called again yesterday and had to go through the entire story again even though they were the ones that were supposed to call me back.  Still same story, the person that would know wouldn't be in until the next day.  I give up.  I can tough it through.  Each day is getting better than the last and I only take the motrin at night.

Thank you all again for being so supportive!!!  Next week will be a better week I am sure ...
