Something scary happend today...

I teach 7th grade math and as I was writing on the board today I was overcome with chest pain.  It was a very scary pain right in my heart...Enough to make me sit down in my chair.  The "episode" last for about 20 minutes but a couple of minutes into it a horrible pain went up th left side of my neck and into my bottom jaw.  It literally made my teeth hurt.  There was a golf ball feeling in my throat that made it difficult to swallow and it even seemed hard to breath.  While I was having the pain I started sweating profusely.  I took off my jacket and just sat there.  Twenty minutes later it was as if nothing every happend.
Does this sound like a panic attack or something?  I had been in a very stressful meeting 5th period and was really worked up about some things going on at my school.
I feel great right now, but if it were to happen again I think I may need to see a doctor.  I don't think it has anything to do with my RNY...maybe I'm just overly stressed.
Has this happend to any of you?  Maybe I jinxed myself...I just said I felt FANTASTIC after losing a 100 lbs.  Does drastic weight loss ever take a toll on your heart?

I don't want to scare you, but go to the ER and let them do an EKG and bloodwork to rule out any issue with your heart. The symptoms you discribe were classic heart attack symptoms. Just because you feel fine now doesn't mean something isn't going on.
Please take care of yourself.

I agree with Vini ~ go get checked out now!!!  You could have possibly had an actual heart attack or an angina attack.  I know that stress can cause angina attacks as well as heart attacks. Either way, it's nothing to mess around with.  Even though you say you feel fine now, please get looked at as soon as possible.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Keep us updated.

I really don't mean to scare you but you should have gone to the hospital right away. It may not be anything but it's always best to make sure. Please see a doctor ASAP just to make sure. The short answer to can weight loss affect the heart is "yes". The heart is a muscle and if you don't maintain high enough protein levels you begin to lose your bodies protein, or simply put you lose muscle. The body tries its best to protect the heart muscle but it can indeed suffer damage from weight loss if protein is deficient. You may be just fine, it could have been a panic attack or reflux, but it's best to be sure.

I'm with Vini. It sounds like classic symptoms of a heart attack. Even though it 'passed' and you feel 'fine' now, I'd have it checked. I doubt that your weight loss has anything to do with this episode. Please have it checked and let us know how you are doing.

I agree with everyone here that has replied to you and have just this week heard that the symptoms you described are classic symptoms of heart attack in women. We have differing symptoms than men and often don't recognise them. Please go to the doc or the ER and get it checked out ASAP!

DITTO on all the previous posts. I was hoping as I read about your scare that you went and got checked out and all was fine.
Please do that ASAP.

While I am not a medical professional by any means. I am a 911 dispatcher and EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) certified. The only reason I say that is because when someone calls 911 we use their symptoms to determine what units to send, the priority of the dispatch and most importantly what pre-arrival instructions to give to the patient while they are waiting for EMS. That being said we are provided the documentation that instructs us EXACTLY what to do and tell the patient based on their symptoms.

I am not trying to scare you at all. However, every one of the symptoms you mentioned are potential symptoms of a heart attack and had you called 911 you would have been given pre-arrival instructions based on heart attack symptoms.

It would be in your best interest to go to the ER and have that checked out.

Please do that today and let us all know the outcome.

I agree with the others.  You need to get it checked out.  Something else it could have been is an esophageal spasm.  I get those occasionally at weird times when I least expect it.  It's a very sharp pain in your chest that goes away after several minutes, then you feel fine.  My mom gets them so bad she takes medicine for them.  I rarely get them, but when I do I feel like I'm gonna die!  It's so painful and all I wanna do is sit and not move because it feels so scary.

Let us know what the doctors say.

I'm a bit late in replying but I agree with everyone else... I hope you went and got checked by a doctor and that everything is fine.  I am a 911 dispatcher also and Bekah said what I would have said...  If you haven't been to a doctor, please go and just get checked out even if you're not having symptoms now, that may have been a warning or just a glitch, but best safe than sorry girl!  Please keep us informed...  I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
