7 weeks and my pouch still wants soft & creamy

Hey there folks. I am almost 7 weeks post surgery. My pouch loves milky cheeses like mozzrella and puddings and yogurts and cottage cheese. Not thrilled with much else; tolerates some things, but very vocal over others. Is there a timeframe I should be looking to when I can expect to be able to eat some of the meat off of a chiken leg that has been slow cooking for hours? Right now, this is not an option. My pouch plays "return to sender" on me.

All in all I feel great and have lost 28.5 lbs. No complaints at all there. I am exercising and I have lots of energy. The menu is becoming a bit mundane and I fear bordeom will set in before freedom of choice rears its head. I have been able to include chili, imagine that a chicken leg is rejected but chili works!!

I woudl apprecite any tidbits of advice here.
Thanks everyone,
Dona

visit egg face's blog from over on the rny and main forums. She has lots of options for early stages and that will help with the boredom. My pouch still has its moments - especially with meats and denser food items. It loves Chili and any type of beans or soup.

As far as a timeframe goes - I don't think there is one. Every pouch is different and my doc basically describes everything as trial and error at this point.

Good Luck!!

Hi Dona,

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling and would suggest that you call Patrick. I would think that you should be able to tolerate a more diverse and substantial diet by now. Next, I would ask to be seen by one of the RNs or Dr's to have them evaluate you for a stricture. Of course, I'm not a medical person at all, but if it were Ben or I, that's the course, I'd take because I don't think that the consistency of the diet you are describing is 'normal' in my experience.

Wishing you all the best,

Hey Barb,
Hope you are feeling better and Happy Birthday. Mine was the 11th so we have yet another thing in common!

My diet has expaned. I can eat chili, meatloaf, chicken salad and some other items. Just cannot tolerate eggs, tuna, fish of any kind really, beef, poultry and I had a small piece of a BBQ rib that stayed down.

It is just very clear my pouch prefers soft and creamy over everthing else.
I spoke with Liz the other day & she asked me to focus on how fast I was eating and the size of the bites. I have done so but no change. She said my pouch is probably just not ready for denser heavier foods yet and to try again in a week or so.

I ate a lot of tuna to start and she suggested that my body may be tired of  it causing me to feel sick when I eat it. Not starving by any means, just wanting to avoid boredom and cheating. My pouch loves oyster crackers and goldfish crackers. Go figure!!

Thanks and I will keep an eye on things

You might want to try shellfish in it's myriad of varieties; especially, shrimp, crab and lobster. They are dense in protien and nutrients and low in calories. There are a variety of ways to prepare them, including just a simple ****tail. Trader Joes has a wonderful house ****tail sauce that just has 1 gram of sugar.

It's still early and it will get better.

In my opinion, you may want to check with the docs....I know everyone is different, but I had my surgery (RNY) 1/21 and so far.. there isn't anything I can't eat a little of.  Chicken in the crockpot, grilled tuna, meatloaf, even a bean burrito.  I try to follow the rules and not drink anything 30 mins before or after, very small bites.. chew chew chew....I have actually been out to eat at various restuarants and KNOCK ON WOOD,,, no problems.   Only thing I have had the slightest problem with is an english muffin.  Go figure!  Good luck.  I know how hard it is to get over the liquid stage and to try something new.  I just suggest go real slow... give it plenty of time to settle.

I'm 4 and 1/2 months out and I can't handle any kind of meat or seafood, expect ground beef and ground turkey so your not alone. I just had another Endoscopy done on Friday and was told all looked well so now they want me to learn to eat things other than soft/mushy foods and I dread it, I hate vomiting lol. Good luck!

Cindy, Thanks for your note. I feel great 99% of the time. I was able to eat some BBQ ribs that were cooked for many hours. I ate very little. There is a part of me that thinks I am trying to get ahead of myself. I do appreciate your wishes and the same back to you.
