Do you have to quit smoking when you have RNY?

ABSOLUTELY!!!! No question! Not negotiable! Not only will cause problems with healing, but according to the folks at Duke, it can seriously irritate the pouch and cause serious problems with ulcers.

If you need to quit, start now!

My surgeon will not operate on a smoker.  It is a must to quit for healing and overall health.  Good luck!  I smoked for about 2 years when I was a teen, but quit cold turkey.  It's not easy, but well worth the health benefits!  Good luck!

I was REQUIRED to quit smoking be for surgery. I quit cold turkey on March 31 2008. My surgeon said that it was paramount to quit because of the complications that it can cause with your new pouch. Besides that just think how good your clothes will smell and people will smell your perfume and not smoke diluted with perfume!..lol..OH and food tastes soo much better too! Best of luck to you!!
