Just to be safe...

I decided it was time to get a medical alert ID. A freind of mine that is a couple of years out had an incident where she was unconcious when paramedics arrived. The paramedics where about to insert an NG tube blind which could have done some serious damage. Thank goodness her husband was there and told them to STOP.

For now I have an 'ugly' medical alert id that I got at the local drug store and had engraved. I'll order a nicer one later. I put the following information on my id:

Name
Gastric Bypass RNY
No Blind NG Tube/NSAIDS
I.C.E.: 555-555-5555 (my Dr's phone number)

Do you  think it's a good idea? Do you have one? What does your say?

I think it may not be such a bad idea...Honestly I have been thinking of getting one in some form for that very reason.

I have  a gold plated medallion I wear on my neck chain.  I don't wear it all the time but I do wear it when I go out of town and when I am doing more extensive traveling (which is rare).  Probably should wear it more often.  The only other suggestion I have - I added the fact that I am allergic to Codeine and I put my birth date (probably doesn't matter how old I am) because you are always asked this wherever you go.  I would definitely recommend anyone adding allergies they have.

It's a very good idea! I almost always where my medical id

I have a pretty one from http://www.laurenshope.com/
It has my name
RNY
No NG tube/NSAIDS

I also have a velcro one for riding my bike or 4 wheeler. I also got it from lauren's hope. It comes with a little insert to write what ever you would like. There is room on both sides of the insert to write info.

I bought mine here before I had my surgery over a year ago. I saw someone post on the Main Forum about it and thought it was a great idea. I mean, we have to be responsible for our own health care when we are unable to speak for ourselves. I mean, we never know when that situation may arise.
I got the wris****ch in sterling and crystal. Goes with everything and I feel naked without a watch so it all made sense.
Mine simply states GBP PATIENT - NO NG TUBE WITHOUT SCOPE

Thanks for posting that Barb. Now maybe I'll remember to get that replacement battery I am needing so desperately.

It hadn't even occured to me to get an ID bracelet.  Great idea!  Please pardon my ignorance, but what is an "NG tube"?

Nasograstric tube. A feeding tube or suction tube that goes down to your stomach through your nose.

With our rearranged antomy it would be bad to have some just attemot to stick a tube in blindly.

Hi Barb,

We were just discussing this on the DS forum the other day.  I've already ordered mine from Laurenshope.com as well, and mine will say:

My Name
Duodenal Switch
Surgery 1/28/2009
Dr. Dennis Smith, Jr.
ICE:770-919-7050

For a pretty one when you get ready, you can order just the tag from Laurens Hope for $5.  Their bracelets are beaded ones, and you make such beautiful jewelry, you should just get the tag and make your own bracelet.  That's what I plan to do, although I doubt mine will be as pretty as anything you come up with.

Great idea.  Thanks for posting!
