Anti-depresants

I am going to be making an appointment with my PCP this week and most likely asking for something for my nerves and depression. Here lately I find myself getting soo worked up internally that it feels like my inside are convulsing/tensely shaking. My surgeon mentioned wellbuterin since I had been on it before, though it was a long time back. My question is what antidepressants are safe or what ones are defiantly not safe to take after RNY GBS? I know you all are not Drs BUT ALOT of you have been where I am. Just want to make sure I am not put on anything that could cause trouble. I fell last week on the ice in a parking lot and thy put me on a short prednisone pack for the pain and swelling. My Surgeon told me to up my nexium for 2 weeks also to prevent ulcers.  ANY input on this will be GREATLY appreciated.

I was on Lexapro prior to surgery and my surgeon had no problems keeping me on it afterwards. I'm off of it now as the depression seems to be gone COMPLETELY!!!! That may be one of my bigger wow moments that I associate with WLS.

The hormone roller coaster is a fun one, isn't it? Good luck with the PCP and hopefully they'll hit on  the right thing for you. Don't be afraid to ask for something different after a few weeks if you still don't feel quite up to par.

I am on Zoloft and it is working wonderful.  I was on the Zoloft prior to surgery also.  I have just had to decrease my dosage and during this time my PCP and I discussed other medications and I was told by the surgeon that I just had to make sure that it was not a time released medication.

Hope this helps some.  Please take care of you......Carrie

((((Polly)))),

I understand more than you might ever know. I take Cymbalta, Trazadone, Clanzapam and Adderal. Cymbalta is a time-released medication, but still works well for me. I started using it prior to surgery have been able to continue it since surgery. I did recently have to have the dosages adjusted/raised, but that doesn't appear to be due to the surgery; it is much more likely that the increased stress of Ben's job loss and other issues are playing a part in the effectiveness of the antidepressants.

Wishing you all the best through this difficult time,

Barbara

Thanks Barbara! I know there are alot of people going through some aweful times right now. I know a pill is not a cure all. I can just feel the stress shaking my insides and it is not a good feeling. To know you are off kilter and well it is scary. But I do apreciate your advice as always. Thank you again so much for your input.....Pollyann

I just got on Lexapro after an extended leave of taking them.  I was on Wellbutrin prior to surgery, but opted for something different this time.  Primarily because Wellbutrin XL was what I was on before and I would have had to take an immediate release version this time.  That would have been twice a day and the side effects are harsher.  The reason is, with RNY, you cannot take extended release medication.  We don't have enough stomach acid to break it down prior to entering the intestine, so there is minimal absorption.

My PCP put me on Lexapro instead.  It's a different type than Wellbutrin.  Wellbutrin works with your dopamine levels and Lexapro is an SSRI, which raises your seratonin levels.  Both are good choices, but feel your doctor out about this.

Good luck.

Before surgery It was recommended that I start taking something again.  Since I had taken Celexa, I started before surgery and continue to take it.  In my opinion it is very helpful to get you through the rough spots as you deal with all the changes that we experience after surgery.  So don't hesitate in asking about something,  Good luck and hang in there.
