field trip...McDonalds?

This Sunday I and another music teacher are taking 8 young students (4th and 5th graders) to Raleigh on a field trip to see the NC Symphony for the Bugs Bunny on Broadway concert.  We leave New Bern very early Sunday morning and plan to take the students to McDonalds across from auditorium for lunch right before the concert.  I'm 6 weeks out and can eat any protein, so what do y'all suggest I eat at McDonalds for lunch?  Or should I take a cooler and take my own lunch?  I don't mind taking a cooler, but it's something else to worry with and I'd prefer to keep it simple so I can concentrate on the kids.  Suggestions?

Pack something.  I am 18 months out and McDonald's (much to children's dismay) is ONE of the few places that still make me sick.  The only thing I can eat there are chicken nuggets and apple dippers.  Even that sometimes makes me ill.

I would pack a small cooler and just eat it there with the kids.  Much better for you not to be sick and throw up on the way home too!

Surprisingly, not one thing I've eaten in my six weeks post-op has made me sick.  I can really eat ANY protein with no problem so far.  Still, you're probably right that I shouldn't risk it.  I'll be out of town and I hate to be sick on a field trip.

Count your blessings if you have not been sick.  I was sick constantly for the 1st 8 months and I was very careful about food choices.  Now that the old rotten gallbladder is out I can pretty much eat most anything.  Id still rather be safe than sorry though!

Well if it can't be a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese combo, they do have some really good salads with grilled chicken for the protein

Have a great time!!!!!

Hey Meredith ~ CONGRATS on your success thus far! Sounds like you are doing GREAT!!  When I first ate McDonald's post-op, I ordered the classic grilled chicken sandwich, I would add cheese and just eat the chicken and cheese, have them either leave the bun off or take it off yourself!! It is yummiful and full of much needed protein!!! Also make sure you take along a healthy protein snack ~ string cheese, nuts or something to that extent!!! Have fun & be safe!!

That sounds like a good plan.  I was thinking the grilled chicken would be okay too.  I was just worried it might not be tender enough.  But if you've had it post-op with no problem, then I'm sure I'll be okay too.  I can take the bun off.  I'm not supposed to eat any carbs yet and I know I don't have enough room in my tiny, wee pouch for any bun anyway.  I'm not that crazy about McDonald's buns as it is.  I've always thought they were kinda firm.  The bun around it may help keep the meat moist in the box before I eat it though, like a little warm, moist jacket.  LOL!

I could definitely take a couple of cheese sticks and my water too.
Thanks so much!

Jami,
The grilled chicken sandwich was great.  I only ate about half the chicken and threw the rest away.  I feel so guilty throwing food away like that, but I guess I'd better get used to that, huh?  I took a few almonds and cheese sticks with me on the trip too.  I shared one of my cheese sticks with the other teacher on the trip.  She wanted to follow my example and concentrate on protein.  I also drank lots of water on the trip.  I took two bottles with me.  Things are going great.

I feel so sorry for all the people who get sick when they eat certain things.  Nothing ever makes me nauseous when I eat it.  I don't know what makes me different or what I'm doing differently.

Meredith, I'm with Jenn....I still can't eat at McDonald's without feeling sick.  BUT....what I'd recommend is taking a protein bar and eating it a half hour before you get to McD's...then order yourself a sugar-free vanilla iced coffee....those things are yummy!  I treat myself to one about once a week, and they're actually quite filling, too!

Have fun on your field trip!
