Being Referred to a Thyroid Specialist

My PCP called earlier this evening with my blood test results. My thyroid level is showing within the “normal" range so she said she does not want to adjust my medication at this time. I told her that if my ultrasound showed an enlarged thyroid and a goiter, and that my weight-loss has been slow even though I’ve had gastric bypass and am consuming just 800-1000 calories per day (and following all of the “rules!"), then isn’t there *something* wrong and *something* that could be done? She said that she would like to refer me to a thyroid specialist. I was very relieved to hear that, though she said there is usually quite a wait to get in.

So now I’m waiting to schedule an appointment and I’ll ask to be put on a cancellation list if they have one. If any of you have had these problems post-op and can share your experience, I would really appreciate hearing about it. I’m a bit confused about how my numbers can be good, but the ultrasound is showing the enlargement and goiter…just wondering how much of an impact this is really having on my weight-loss.

Thank you!

Hi Shauna, I am glad that they are going to refer you so that you can get some answers!!  I have never had a problem with mine that I know of.

I am with Vera - I have never had thyroid prolems.  But if the levels are good - and you say they are - then I wouldn't think there would be a problem with weight loss.  I would say it means a close watch on your levels, and should it grow, what are the options?  I also seem to remember that thyroid levels can show *normal* and after some time become abnormal - even with medications - and really should have been abnormal from the start.   Does that make any sense?

Look up T3, T4, TSH on google to learn about the tests that are used and what the numbers stand for.  Don't know the actual numbers?  Get a copy of your labs and compare them to see if there is a trend - going up or down.

Take care,
Shelia

Thanks, Shelia!  Yes, that makes perfect sense.  I've spent most of my adult life with the symptoms of hypothyroidism, but my numbers had always within the good range until July '08.  Did tons of research on it years ago and realized the number can actually vary greatly for individuals.  I tend to agree with those that say it's better to treat it according to symptoms but not every physician does.  Can't wait to speak with the specialist!

Shauna,

Those stupid blood tests don't always tell the whole story that is why the specialist is such a good idea. They can do so many more detailed tests that will tell you exactly what the deal is.  I could not get my thyroid under control until I went to Winston to the specialist and he got it together in just a couple of visits but he had to split my thyroid to do it and as long as I take my meds I have no problems.  I sure hate to see you having all these problems maybe when we get you straight things will flow smooth.  I keep you in my prayers!!!!!!!!!

Leslie,  I'm glad to hear that a specialist was able to help you with your thyroid.  So he split your thyroid medication, not your actual thyroid glad, I'm hoping?!  If my body were a car, at this point I'd seriously think about trading it for another model.  hehehe  Will be glad with everything is straightened out also!  Thanks for your prayers.

Hi Shauna,

I'm glad to hear that your Dr says your numbers are good, but I'm sure that you must also be frustrated. I hope that when you are able to see a specialist, you'll get some answers. If you are not able to find others on this board that have had experience with thyroid problems, you might want to cross post this issue to the Main and RNY forums to see if you get more response by casting a wider net.

Yes, it is frustrating, Barb.  Thanks for understanding!  The one thing I don't understand is why I'd have a golf ball in my neck if my numbers are good, so I'll be anxious to ask the specialist about that in particular.  I almost cross-posted my posts last night because I was anxious to hear experiences, but I have to admit I am way too timid to venture off of our safe lil' ol' NC forum.    Really glad you all have come forward to help inform and encourage...I expected nothing less!

Can't help you with this one girlfriend but so glad  you're seeing a specialist for it even if you have to wait.
