Lowfat cheese to go with this "whine"!

Last night I really lost my temper with my husband and daughter.  I don't think that they are consciously trying to sabotage me, but it's starting to feel that way to me.  Both of them have been eating Ben and Jerry's ice cream in front of me, and Monday night at 10:30 pm, I was awakened by the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven!  I came out of the bedroom and my daughter was snacking away on them.  It took me a long time to go back to sleep because of the aroma - I got up and drank 2 glasses of water and finally fell back asleep.

Am I being childish?  Ice cream and chocolate chip cookies are definitely "trigger foods" for me, and I have spoken to both of them about it.  If they wouldn't eat them in front of me, it might not be so difficult, but lately it seems like there's an undercurrent of "mean spiritedness" there.

Thanks for listening, and I'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions/divorce attorneys you might suggest!  (Just kidding on the attorney......FOR NOW!!!)

My kids and husband have always eaten what they wanted since Day 1 of my WLS.  I would always try to divert my attention away from them enjoying whatever they were eating at the time so I would not be tempted to enduldge and spend the next 30 minutes in the bathroom.

Ive always looked at it like this.. I cannot ask them to give up what they like because I was the fat one in the family and the one with addiction issues.  WLS was my choice (not theirs) and I have always tried to hold those feelings at bay.  I want them to eat healthier and they do because of me.. but I cannot ask them to totally forgo having something because I love it.  Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks, Jennifer!

Both of them are very overweight - over 300 lbs each, which is confusing to me in a bunch of ways.  I feel like they KNOW that they need to curtail, (at the very least!), this kind of stuff, but if I say anything, then I'm being "preachy".  I guess I just needed to vent, and I always feel safe on this board.

I appreciate your comments, though - thanks again!

Makes things a bit different if they are overweight too.  I was the only chunky monkey in this house.  My husband is 6'3" and always been on the slim to average side.  The girls are not big either.  It was all me here.

I would most likely feel considerably different if they were overweight.  :)  It is frustrating to you I know.  It is to me too!  LOL

Hi Betsy,

I know what you mean about the temptation.  I am going to asume that they are the ones doing the buying of that type of junk food/ingredients.  I think I would have to sit them both down and tell them that from now on I would be doing the grocery shopping and if there was anything they needed to put it on the list.  I would also tell them how much I loved them and wanted them to be health also. Let them know that you are not trying to preach or live their lifes but that you are trying to help them live a better and longer live because you love them!

Good luck!

If you need to feed my dogs - I'm right around the corner. Believe me, my dogs eat well. With all the teenage boys in my house there is a lot of junk food that comes in the house. If they don't put it away (outta sight - outta mind is my  hard and fast rule) then I don't hesitate to call in the hounds. ( Black Lab, Bloodhound & Great Dane). the boys have learned fairly quickly that their Moma means business.

They still have their treats but they are really my biggest cheerleaders. My oldest has trimmed down about 50 lbs. in the past year and now makes much better food choices. About all you can do is set a good example. Good Luck to you. Let me know if there's anything I can do - I'll get bail money together if you need it.

Thank you so much for your replies.  I did "settle down" and I talked to my husband yesterday evening when I got home from work.  He was really great about hearing me out, and understanding about how I felt.  I don't want them to feel deprived because I am doing this, but I do care about their health as well.

Thanks for listening and being there for me.  You all are so wonderful on this message board, and I appreciate how much you all care for everyone here.

Have a great day!
Betsy
