9 month follow up

Had my nine month follow up today...at  just over 10 months out, hey, I'm busy!  LOL  I was concerned about the recent -and scary- hypoglycemic episodes I've been having here lately.  The only pattern I can pick out is after exercise or physical activity and after carbs/sugars.  BUT, this is a "fuzzy" pattern.  Often times, as of late, I will find myself VERY fatigued in the middle of tthe day, for no apparent reason.

I was told to lay off the carbs/sugars (of course, should have known that one) and to NOT try to "fix" my low blood sugar moments with candy, orange juice, or the like.  They told me that it may very well make it WORSE when I "crash" the second time.  This kind of makes sense, even though I've never thought of it before.  They recommenended a protien rich "snack" when they happen (peanut butter, protien bar, shake etc) and before and after exercise.  I'll try, but I'm not sure.  I'm thinking I may have a vitamin issue also.  Dr. M told me he would let me know when the lab results came back if there was a problem.  I'm really concerned about vitamin deficiency.  I don't want to have to do the IV infusion stuff or the like.

Other than that...he told me I was doing GREAT!  205lbs on the scale at the office (with shoes, jeans, and coat), so I'll say 200 even :).  He told me I was a "skinny" 200lbs (I'm 6'1", with a large frame), and that if I leveled off now I'd be fine.  We joked that we were now wearing the same size pants even though I've probably got at least 50 pounds on him (he's short/small).  LOL  It was great to get the "official word" that I've been succesful...Me, sucessful with weight loss!  Whoda thunk it?

Have a great evening everybody!

 Jason,

So glad to hear your 9 month (10 month) appointment went so well.

Your comment about the official word of success made me laugh.  I think we all feel the same way.  Me?  Whoda thunk it?  :)

Yes...you!  Congrats on a job well done!!!

Congrats man!!!!

You know Dr. M.  He's kinda reserved in giving out the praise.  So for him to say that, must have made you feel awesome.  Congrats on the hard work and the fantastic success you have achieved.

BTW, do you know when the Southern Surgical support group meets.  I have been meaning to try and make one.  Greenville's a stretch for me during the work week but I'd like to get some feedback from the staff and other patients on some of the little things that have been urking me, so am planning to try and make one soon.  Nearly 10 months out and the weight loss is slowing,  a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!  Still have 80 or so lbs I'd like to lose and looking for ideas on how to get the ball rolling again.  Not ready for this ride to be over quite yet.

Thanks Jason...

Hey Dalton,

Yeah, I think alot of the guy but he ISN"T known for his accolades.  He made my wife SOOOOO MAD during her last visit because he suggested she should be a little bit lighter at this point after her sugery.  She came home and called him all sorts of names!  LOL  You know how the ladies can be!  Such a little dude too, I remember making the appointment and expecting a tall, authoritative figure and this guy comes in who looks like he could fit into my 7 year old's pajamas.  Great guy though, and yes it did make me feel great!

I think the support group is the first Tuesday of each month at 6 or 7PM.  This may have changed, however.  I didn't see a sign today when I was there so you may want to call and check.  I've never been, sad to say, so I don't know what goes on.  I'd also like to go but, like you, it's hard to make time during the week, especially with my kids in school this time of year.

Best of luck to you.

Jason, You?  Busy?  Nahhh.    At least you haven't fallen off the face of the earth like SOME people.

I read your explanation of your hypoglycemic episodes with great interest.  I tried and tried to stabilize myself with the protein rich snacks just like your practice (and mine) suggest, but to absolutely no avail.  It wasn't until I was talking to people that have battled it for years and got some advice about carrying a piece of candy, drinking 3-4 oz. of OJ, etc.  After practicing these pieces of advice, I have finally gotten mine under control.  I think the key for me has been to do the piece of candy and then follow it with the protein...that way I don't spike then plummet (make sense?).  I'm now more stable than not, which means I've really turned a corner.  I think the key for anyone is to experiment and find what works for them.  I also SWEAR mine worsens with exercise...what an excuse, huh?

Hope your labs all come back good.  I get mine drawn Friday and am anxious to see what they show.

You definitely are a walking poster-child for a successful weight-loss surgery patient...YES YOU!!!

Hmm, I guess I could try that Shauna.  Let's see, Reeses cups THEN peanut butter!  LOL  Sounds like my kind of snack!  (I'm kidding)!  LOL

Today has thus far been a good day.  I have tried my best to stay away from carbs/sugar with pretty good results.  I did eat a semi-starchy breakfast, but I was ok.  There is truth to exercise making it worse!  That's when mine is at its worst.  I can't stand the cold sweat, mental fog feeling that comes with mine!  And I, for some reason, always seem to (without thinking about it) tell everyone around me that "IIIII'mmmm  OOOOOKKAAAAYYYY,  RRRRRREEEAAALLLLLEEEE"  while I'm stubling around unable to focus on anything.  WHY on earth do I do that?!

Jason it could very well be hydration issue or blood pressure causing the sudden dippy feeling right after exercising. I experience similar stuff out in the woods and its not a bit fun when you have many miles to go just to attempt to get to civilization. I am lucky though and have an RN I hike with. He tells me that when the activity stops your blood flow is also slowed really quickly and tends to settle more in your legs instead of your head. Hence you get the heeby jeebies of black out or weakness. I also agree you are having sugar issues as well but dang man look at where you were nine months ago. I usually protein up heavily before working out and then it does not seem to be a big deal. I know doctors frown on that stuff in the test tube but for me that 26 gm protein with out any sugars or carbs is a real benefit to me. Im still working on getting to 200 and hopefully another forty lower but 120 lbs in nine months is excellent for you man.

Keep up the good work.
