Tomorrow my wife is dropping me off at Kephart Prong in the Smokey Mountain Park for a three day excursion. I had planned on fishing but due to pack weight issues it was just too much stuff for the climp. My route will begin about 2300 feet and peak out on day two at 5200 feet. I got my pack down to forty pounds which in winter is about the norm for keeping the cold out. This will be my first solo attempt on Mount Kephart then swinging down into Bradley fork valley on the other side. The distance is about 12 miles to 15 miles so it wont be too bad just the climb which will equal to about one and a half times the height of the Empire state building by stairs. I have done several short hikes with light packs but this one will be a doozy. I feel pumped up about it and plan on maybe taking on the big climb all in one day and stopping farther than I planned. bless my wife she spent a small fortune on a sleeping bag that would keep my big butt warm too. So if you dont see any insane comments from the ol man here just be paitent I'll get back hopefully with some cool pictures of the trip to share. I may have to take a little local fire water with me just in case the St. Bernard does not find me with some brandy. This is something I have been working up to for a couple of months so I should do it in flying colors providing the trail is in good shape. So yall have fun on here for the next few days and find Barbaras Hubby a job and call Sandy on her cell phone since folks just love to speak with her. And Darcie put the top down on Spydey and enjoy the hot weather for the next couple of days.. NOT>> to all my friends and other interested people Happy New Years....

Hey Push,

I hope that you have a beautifully uneventful excursion that warms your heart and soul. I'm looking forward to photos of your trip... It's the only way that I'll ever enjoy something like that.

Be safe!

That sounds like an awesome adventure!   Even though I am down 114 lbs, climbing mountains will never be something i can do with my dang knees.   I am grateful to walk a few miles without pain.  The rest of us old folks will have to live vicariously through your adventure so please be sure to take pics.   Be safe!

Push,  ENJOY!  We had a neighbor that lived to a very ripe old age and was hiking clear to Mount Mitchell on a regular basis up until near the end of his days.  I'm sure it was all those hikes made his heart and spirit strong.  Since we've moved here to the mountains, it's hurt me to think I might never be able to venture out into the countryside and see some of the untouched areas.  Now with the sciatica gone and the weight dropping, perhaps there is now hope?  My children love nothing more than to take treks up into the mountains surrounding us.  (Always with the oldest son or dad with them!)  One of the reasons I had the surgery was in hopes to one day tag along with them.  I am tickled you are able to suck the marrow out of life.  Can't wait to see pictures!

I probably missed you and you are gone already but I really hope you are going to have a great and safe trip. Enjoy being outdoors and take a nice, clean breath for me.

Amazing! I am in awe of people that can do those kinds of things! I would be terrified being out there alone and for you to stay at night... Yikes! Like I said, I'm in awe! Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you back online in a few days!
