I am interested in the DS procedure. I live in Georgia, but he is the closest person on my insurance plan that does the procedure.

I would appreciate any information on his practice.

I too am pre op for the DS.  I live in Asheville, NC and am going to Dr. Dennis Smith in Marietta, GA.  He has done more than 300 lap DSes while I think Dr. Voellinger has done about 50.  Could you go to Marietta?  (Atlanta area).  I think Dr. Smith's expertise is known nationwide.  Even if he's out of network for you it would be worth the extra money.

I WOULD LOVE TO USE DR SMITH, BUT I DONT THINK MY INSURANCE WOULD COVER IT EVEN AS AN OUT OF NETWORK PROCEDURE. I E-MAILED, HIS OFFICE, SO MAYBE THEY WILL GET BACK WITH ME SOON. I THINK YOU'VE CHOSEN A GREAT SURGEON.

Hi,
I am waiting on VSG surgery with Dr V. While I really like him and trust him, I am very frustrated with the staff. I completed all of my appts. on Nov 4 and they still have not given the lady  all of their clearance letters so she can send my packet off to BCBS. If I could have gone to outside sources instead of the inhouse staff, I truly believe my surgery would already be scheduled. I get the excuse that well, some have been on vacation, and then the Thanksgiving holiday, blah blah blah!
I know I will be very pleased with Dr. V. It's just this waiting that is making me crazy!!!
They are all very nice and caring  ladies and made me feel very comfortable. Maybe I'm just being too impatient. They did tell me on 11/4 to give them 2 weeks to get their letters done. It's been over 4 weeks now so with my pushing, maybe it will happen soon
Good luck!
Pam

Thanks for the forewarning. That could be kinda frustrating for me, especially since I'm in another state. I will take that into cisideration.

I went to Dr. Voellinger's office in the beginning (a little over two years ago).  I attended his seminar and was very impressed with his expertise and presentation.  My BMI at the time was about 70 and I really wanted a DS.
At that time, my ins required that I do a 6 month doctor monitored weight loss program pre-op.  The ins specifically said I should not go thru the surgeon's office (written in the policy that way).  But I felt very pressured by Dr. V's staff to go thru them.  And I was worried that this pressure would carry over to pushing me to use supplements/shakes, etc. from their office as well.
In the meantime, I realized that my ins would not cover a DS and so I went with a Fobi RNY with Dr. Jon Pirrello.  I'm really glad I did.
My impression is that Dr. V is very good, but I have heard other folk had issues with the staff.  I know that different people have diffferent relationships so hopefully others who have had successful interactions with the staff can give you some guidance.
Good luck!

I had RNY with Dr. V. I can't say enough good things about him and his staff. The week after surgery, was my worst week. I was on the phone everyday with one of his nurses and/or Heather, the nut, as well as emailing them throughout the day.  They really got me thru that week, which was horrible!  I started my journey in January of 08 and didn't have surgery until August 13, 2008. Once everything was submitted to BC/BS, it only took about a week to get approval. I did not feel any pressure from anyone in his office, not did I feel obligated to purchase products from their "store". But everyone is different. I had a very good experience with Dr. V and his staff. Actually on my last visit, his nurse thanked me for being so compliant. Not everyone is! Good Luck!
