Update on my few questions (and a few replies)

First of all, thank you Iris, Polly and Andrea for your replies under my other thread.

Yes, I'm having a major reaction to the steri-strips now.  My skin is splitting open into big sores.  I am treating them as they erupt and one strip came off today...5 more to go.

I also woke up today with the very problem that drove me to vegetarianism.  When I eat animal proteins, my bowels come to an absolute standstill.  The pain literally knocks my breath away.  So I ate animal protein Friday night and yesterday (mostly seafood) and this morning I woke up in doubled-over pain.  The only way I can describe it is like my entire insides are filled with concrete.

I take 2 doses of MiraLax a day to keep moisture in my bowel to help prevent this problem and I have been taking it (prescribed by my gastroenterologist).  We learned that the only way this works is to use the double dose of MiraLax and eat a vegetarian diet.  Well, yesterday my blood sugar stayed stable, thanks to the animal protein, but now I have this terrible pain issue.  I will also be majorly constipated for awhile...it's par for the course.

I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment with my nut and start keeping the journal like Andrea suggested.  (Yes, a PITA, but thank you for the reminder!)  I think this is going to be a neccessity for me to figure out what I can and cannot eat and what will keep my blood sugar stable.

Trying hard not to spiral into a depression about all of this.  I am just scared to death that I have added to my current health problems just to try and prevent possible future ones.  I want to feel healthy and happy, not non-functioning and crying!

The good news is that the only "problems" I'm having with my RNY are very specific personal ones that most people wouldn't ever have to deal with.

Shauna,

I am glad you were able to figure out a few of the issues you were having.  I'm sorry you are going thru this now but hopefully your NUT will be able to get you on a stable diet  that will be conducive for you.  Take care of your self and I hope everything else is going good for you.

Rahsheeda, Thanks bunches.  Hubby took a close look at the steri-strips last night and they weren't even stuck on well enough to be holding things together so we took them off.  I feel MUCH better in that regard today!  Phew!  My nut is supposed to be calling me today so I'm anxious to talk with her about figuring this out.  Have a feeling it's going to be trial and error for awhile, but I'll do whatever it takes!

Shauna,
Sorry to hear that you have been having some pain and problems. I know that when things dont go smoothly it can knock you down and get you down the dumps, but dont let it. You have way too much going for you to let this get you down. Just go talk to your NUT and they can help you work things out and get you back going again! I know that you can get through this. I BELIEVE IN YOU SHAUNA!I love ya and if you ever need anything, please call, even if it is just to talk!
Let me know how you are doing!

Jennifer,  Thanks for believing in me.  I am waiting on a call back from Becky so I hope she can offer me some good advice.  How are things going for you?  You'll have to give me a thorough update when you can.  I'll miss seeing you this Saturday but hope to see you the following Thursday!  {{{Hugs}}}

Shauna, Hang in there, girl!  I had a really rough time the first 3 months, but it gets better, I promise!!!  I was "non-functioning and crying" for a long time and never dreamed I'd be living comfortably like I am now....Now I have a "pouch of steel" and hardly ever get sick...not so the first few months.  If you can tough it out right now, you'll be feeling so much better in a little while.

I'm hanging!  Can't wait to be where you are and living comfortably.  I am lucky to have the pouch of steel...I've just always had these intestines that don't want to function properly.  Will have to learn to live with them along with the blood sugar issue.  Once I get that figured out, I'm sure everything is going to be fine.  {{{Hugs!}}}

 Hi Shauna,
  I just want to say Hi from a neighbor in Black Mountain & tell you I am sorry your feeling low.
  Are you walking some? ( I like lake Tomahawk!) That can help things move along.   Are you off painkillers?  pain meds makes my intestines come to a dead stop!  Give your body some more time to heal.  Hang in there.  Gwyn

Gwyn,  Well hello neighbor!  It's nice to "meet" you.  Lake Tomahawk is like the town jewel, isn't it?  When we first relocated here, we lived one block away from the lake.  That is some of our children's very best memories.  All the walks at the lake...our doggie just loves it too.  Can't wait till spring when I should be able to make it around several times at a steady pace instead of once or twice like a snail!

In the meantime, I plan on taking advantage of our Cheshire membership.  Looking forward also to the opportunity to try to keep what muscle I can once I get the go-ahead.

As of right now, I'm still healing and moving as much as I can.  On my feet enough with day-to-day activities that pain and fatigue find me needing a chair and/or some recooperation time!

Hubby and I were just talking this morning about trying to get on a walking schedule in the evenings this week though so I'm going to give it a try and see how much I can do.  We live in a great neighborhood to walk in so I'll probably just start here at home then hit the treadmill as soon as I feel I can handle it.  I have a feeling I'll also need to have the blood sugar issue under control so as not to embarress myself at the gym!

Oh, and no pain meds of any kind for me since the first week post-op.  I'd been "going" fine until I added the animal protein -- which is par for the course for me.

Congratulations on your weight-loss!  I'm meeting more and more locals that have had surgical weight-loss.  It's amazing how many of us are out there!

Ohh, Shauna - I thought the seafood would be okay for you - did you eat something else??  I hate that on top of healing you are having other issues.  Please call and talk to Jock and Becky tomorrow and see what they can suggest.  Don't forget to talk about hypoglycemia, too.. Did you look into a glucometer??

Talk to you tomorrow...
Shelia
