MORE ON VITAMIN D.../BLOODWORK RESULTS

Well, I just had my most recent blood test results from my doctor.  He had wanted to follow up on my hypothyroidism.  Those results appear to be normal although I still have some hair loss and scaley skin around the eyebrows, nose and ears...  I asked my doc to test for Vitamin D as well... glad I did, as my levels are way too low.  Not in the deficient range yet but too low.  As per normal protocol, he prescribed 50,000 units of D2.  I protested a bit and said but my body won't absorb D2, it only takes in D3.  His reply was  "Your body is obviously not absorbing the D3 you are giving it so I want you to try this out for a few months and we will follow up after you do that."  Well, proactive as I am, I checked out his script, and it would cost me more than I want to spend on something I KNOW my body won't absorb.  So I ordered VitaLady's 50K capsules of Vit D3 to take instead.  I am not suggesting that anyone go AMA as I have done, just sharing what I did.  Actually VitaLady's caps were less than the ones my doc ordered.  But I know I will be getting the benefit of them when I have every reason to believe that the D2 he prescribed won't do me any good at all..

Meanwhile, my hair continues to fall out, albeit more slowly since I started on the T3 supplements, I still don't lose weight, and my skin is dry and scaly in areas (that has also improved some since adding the T3).  I go back for more testing in 3 months and I will let you all know what those results indicate after VitaLady's D3 regime.

Oh, and here is a link to an interesting article I found on Vitamin D, for what it's worth:

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

Suz,

I'm sorry you're having problems, but I am watching to see what your test results are in 3 months.  I am also Vitamin D deficient and have been perscribed 50,000 UI for 3 months.  I don't know if my body absorbes D like it's supposed to or not so I'm doing as Dr MacDonald says and being a good girl (for now... lol).  I wish you the best of luck with the T3 supplements and like I said, I'll be anxiously awaiting your results.

Take care of yourself and I'll talk with you soon!  Hope to see you at the Christmas party!

Hugs,

Sheryl

I know.  I thought of you when I got diagnosed.  So you will take the D2 and I will take the D3.  We can do our own lab testing!  LOL  (The T3 is a thyroid supplement... not a form of Vit D)  I am sure we will both do just fine, but I am curious to see if the D3 takes care of it as I think it will.  I will also be taking the 50K units.  Vitamin D is all the rage these days!

Oh, I wasn't sure what the T3 was... I wonder sometimes if my thyroid is doing weird things too but I've been tested and the labs come back fine.  So I guess not, that's a good thing.  Take care my friend!  See ya soon!

I will be anxious to see both of your results! My surgeon also prescribed me Vitamin D.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

WTG for standing up for yourself and being self-educated about the D2 in oil.

Just a note -- and i don't know how often he has you taking the D3-50, but I took 50k per day for 90 days without any issues.  It made an appreciable difference within a few days -- my bones stopped aching within maybe 4-5 days after doing the 50k.

Thanks, Andrea!  It isn't always easy to stand up for yourself...  He has me taking the 50K daily so that is what I will do with the D3.  Then he wants to retest in 3 months.  You mean, some of my aches and pains might go away????  Do you think this could be related to my skin and hair issues???  Also nails are a mess and I have taken 5K mcg of Biotin from about a month post op).

Thanks again!

Yup -- you probably have osteomalacia -- the adult form of Rickets.  So with the D going up, the pain will subside, probably within a week or so, depending on how low your number is.  It can also help with depression, and probably your hair and nails, too.

Keep us updated :-)

Well I do have osteopenia...  The test level number was 24 ng/mL with a "norm" of 30-89 (which I know Michelle would laugh at since she strongly suggests a minimum of 80).  I just read his script and he wanted me to take 2 50K caps a week not the one a day I thought he had said!  I think Michelle suggests daily doses for a month, then down to 3-4 times a week with a retest at 6 weeks to make sure not to overdose... if still under 80 then go back to daily for another month, then cut back then test again.  I intend to reach out to her for more details.  My doc doesn't want to retest til 3 months, but I want PTH and calcium levels rechecked as well as the D so I many hit him again in 6 weeks...

That would be SO nice to see my skin hair and nails come back... and I would just love getting rid of some aches and pains!

I did daily 50k and had no problems.. and retested at 90 days.  Just a thought.

You can have both osteopenia and osteomalacia.
