X post - Yoga?? My experience
Well, I researched and found a yoga class for beginner's at the Senior Center... Thought - well, maybe that is for me. I am nearly 55 and I can be a part of the Senior Center...
So I went today - 2 pm to 3:30 pm.
OMG - the instructor used words I have never heard of before ! And wanted me to get on the Floor ! I haven't been on the floor in forever, about had a panic attack - and I have NEVER had a panic attack. I declined politely and said I wanted to observe today and I would join in where I felt comfortable. She rung a little bell several times, but I never knew why. Thank goodness I was the 4th person there, so I didn't feel too self-conscious.
All I can say is I am so glad I didn't pay money for this adventure. I was allowed a chance to drop in and see.
I doubt that I will be back. I am more of a water aerobics or Richard Simmons type of gal... give me some fast music and some fun steps to do and I will be there......

Sorry it was a bad experience Sheila, but pat yourself on the back for trying! I've never experienced bells in the yoga classes I've been to, that might creep me out a bit too. But, we do get on the floor a lot. It's too bad that the girl didn't spend some time explaining things when she noticed a new person there. My instructor always asks if there's anyone new so she can go over those basics with them. :( Oh well...at least you gave it a try!
LOL... I'm right there with you Sheila, I like to dance and sing and boogie on down... Yoga is not for me, I would have wanted to watch a session first also. No way would I twist myself into a pretzel, I'd either not be able to get untangled or I'd pass gas and get the giggles so bad that I'd end up twisted in the hospital... lol! Anyway, I'm glad you went and who knows, maybe you'll go again and actually feel like you can do what you saw them doing...
Have a great day!!!

You have made me giggle this morning, Sheryl - I thought about the passing gas part, too. And sometimes, there is a surprise when that happens !
I sorta doubt that I will go again. But I am going to try getting in the floor in the privacy of my own home and keep the phone nearby in case I need to call my daughter to come help me up !! I would never call 911 - too many of my buddies from the EMS would get a big laugh out of that....
So - I will continue with water aerobics, cycling, walking and good ole Richard Simmons.
You have a great day, too!

Sheila,
I almost didn't mention that part but I thought heck we'd ALL understand this part... lol! And it is a surprise sometimes isn't it... lol!
Ok, if you get on the floor do keep that phone next to you... if you have to call 911 don't worry about it, just do it... I'm a 911 dispatcher (you already know that I'm sure..ugh) anyway, we don't mind getting that kind of call. Believe me, we do get some doosies! That would be a relief... lol! I almost had to call 911 the first time I was able to get into the tub and almost couldn't get out... Imagine that, no wait, don't imagine that... we'll leave it at that... LOL!!!
I love water aerobics, dancing and Richard Simmons. I had the opportunity to meet him and dance in one of his stage shows way back when... I have pics somewhere... it was funny - 425 lbs of me dancing/sweating like a pig with high energy Richard... But I had fun.
Ok, gotta get... Take care girl!

Oh Shelia! It sounds like you had better stick with what you know you enjoy.
Maybe you could find some dance exercise classes like zumba, salsa, etc.? Water aerobics are GREAT.
Cait came home saying she had her first yoga class at school yesterday and she loved it. Her favorite were the "warrior poses." I asked her if she'd like to attend a beginner's yoga class with me held on Saturdays at our gym once I'm given the okay from the surgeon and she said she'd love to. That class starts at noon, then the family swim starts at 1pm. I figured that would be a great way for our family to spend a few hours on Saturdays.
Since I've never tried a class, but have always wanted to, I am really hoping I like the yoga class. I'm also going to see about the tai chi and feldenkrais classes. That mind/body stuff fascinates me.
Oh, and the bell... She should have explained to you what her purpose for it was but my guess is that it was a reminder to stop, focus, breathe, slow down, listen, and be present in the here and now. (Zen!)
I'm just so proud of you that you are out there taking chances and trying new things! Have you ever given belly dancing any thought? I wish my confidence (and sciatica) would allow me to tackle that one of these days! Can you even imagine?!

That is co-incidental that Caitlin had her first yoga class yesterday, too. LOL I am glad she liked it. The warrior pose, the stork, the car, the tiger.. saw all of them yesterday.
What is feldenkrais class?? The mind and body stuff I understand and I really liked the relaxation techniques at the end. Being mindful of what we eat, how we move, and include breathing can't help but make is more healthy. I hope that you will like it and going to the gym with the family and then swim will be great for family time and exercise.
There is a lot of fat on this ole body before I would even consider belly dancing... I am going to continue to look at things and see what else I can find that I would enjoy.
