for those 1 year or further

I wanted to throw this idea out and see what people thought - a few of us have been batting around the idea of starting a support group in Charlotte for those 1 year out or further - Ive found the further out Ive gotten the issues/problems/successes Ive had are much different than when I was a 'newbie'... while there are a lot of great support groups in the area they focus more towards general newbie issues than more specific issues some of us further out have (not to mention the further people get out the less they go to many of the group!).
We dont have any details worked out - just meet once a month or so at different places/resturants/coffeehouse whatever and chat and talk about our issues. Maybe via a yahoo group or something so we can get threads going relating to the meetings etc.
Just looking for some feedback/ideas!

I can see both sides of the coin.

Further outs do deal with more things like regain and such.. and might find it easier to discuss without seeing currently melting people around.

But those newbies need to have the oldies as resources.  When I had my ulcers diagnosed, I think it was a reminder to the newbies to watch themselves.. especially since I've never had an NSAID in my postop life.

While *I* feel nebies need to have the oldies as resources... many times newbies do not want to hear what some who are further out have to say - they also are in the phase where everything their surgeon says is the word of God and if you say otherwise you are nuts.

I dont mean this is a replacement to anybodies support group, just an alternative... I cannot keep going to a support group just to be there for a newbie when there is nobody to be there for me ya know? While I do pop in now and then to check up on people and see how things are I really dont get much out of it except socializing.

I will be a year out in Dec. and would be interested in that type of group.

I'd be interested... While I definitely want to continue support those coming behind me, to be honest there are issues that I have being farther out that I feel somewhat uncomfortable talking about with people who are so new to the process...

I know that you are looking at doing something in the Charlotte area. I was wondering about something in the Raleigh area as well.

I found that the leaders seem to want to talk roses and puppies - things like protein, exercise, suppliments... topics of complications, transfer addicitions, regain are pushed to the side because people dont really want to hear about it and think "not going to happen to me".... too bad NC is such a big damn state so we cant do something more centralized!

Hi Jennifer,

I agree and there are plenty of other issues and/or concerns that folks a year out or more have as well. I am working on putting together a WLS grads group in the Raleigh area. Maybe we can see about doing something state wide once in while where we get together midpoint. I'd love to meet you and others at some point. Please let me know how your Charlotte WLS Grads group comes along.

All the best,

Barb

P.S. If you ever want to share ideas for WLS grads topics, please feel free to contact me.

Jennifer - please let me know if you decide to do this. I'll drive to Charlotte anytime for a group like that! I go to the Raleigh group too, but I'm in the middle between both places and would love to be a part of that. I do think we have some other issues and it would be great to have that kind of support!

Jennifer,

I would love to have a group like that.  I will be one year out in January but have thought about this same type of group for some time.  We definitely need more support in the Piedmont area.  I own Plaster Creations in Kannapolis and would love to host an event.  I have seating for 60 or more.  If you need help, please contact me.

Thanks,

Barbara
