Pre Surgery Liquid diet

I am on the pre-surgery liquid diet.  Does anyone have any suggestions for thinks I can drink that will help with hunger????  The protien drinks only "stay with me" for about an hour before my stomach starts growling.  I drink water, crystal lite and protein water all day (yesterday I drank about 70 OZ total!  I had to pee every hour!)  I have had strained soup, broth and tomato soup but nothing stays with me very long.  I am waking up at night with my stomach growling.  Please do not tell me this is "head hunger"...it is real hunger!  My surgery is on Monday so I do not have very much longer to go.  I hope I can make it...will power is not my strong point!

I'm sorry that you're having a hard time. I really don't have any suggestions because my Doc required something different BUT Hang in there, Monday will be here before you know it.

Try something warm. Sometimes that helps somewhat. Other than that, keep pushing the fluids. I know that they don't stay with very long, but remember that in the grand scheme of things that this time is not so very long and the benefit far outweighs the sacrifice. Keep your list of why you are doing this near so that you can refer to it and work on getting your head to conquer the strong, primal urge to feed you.

Hang in there, you CAN do this.

Thanks Barb...I am drinking coffie right now and it is helping.  I am going out and looking for some different soups today.  I heard that the Vitamin World place in Smithfield at the outlet mall sells a protein powder called ANY WHey that has no taste, I want some but $$ are low right now.  I did cheat yestrerday...I feel so guilty...I had about 3 mini reeses cups!  They were just sitting there calling to me!  I felt so bad about eating them that I did not really enjoy them at all!  i know I can do this, I just need to stay busy.  Sunday will be the worst what with the clear liquids and the Magnisuim Citrate I have to dring to "clean me out" for surgery.  I wonder why I am so tired?  Is it because of the liquid diet?  I am getting enough protein with the suppliments.  My blood sugars are running a little high (which is weird) I think I will go for a walk and see if that helps my energy level.

To be honest, you probably won't be that hungry when you are doing the dreaded bowel prep because the magnesium citrate seems to quell the hungrys or at least that was my experience. You may be fatigued because of your reduced calorie intake, but check with Patrick or one of the nurses if it's a significant issue for you. You may be able to get 'AnyWhey' at Walmart if I remember correctly.

Re: cheating. Don't beat yourself up abou****er under the bridge. Just move forward with renewed resolve to do what's in your best interest. If and when you are tempted again, remember that you didn't really 'enjoy' the last foray into cheating waters and that it didn't really satisfy you. I found that I was able to use that to help keep me from doing it again.

You are soooo close now. Congratulations.

And here I offered to do my 10 day pre-op liquid diet a bit longer because I do have a fatty liver!  Oi!

I second the motion on taking in something warm.  I've also heard that helps quite a bit and that warm V8 juice seems to do the trick for some.  If that's on your plan, you might try that.  Remember that caffiene and even some artificial sweeteners actually trigger hunger!

Ok I heard from Patrick at Duke WLSC and he said I could have the "cream of" soups as long as I use the healthey request  stuff.  He told me to try mixing cream of Broccoli and the cheddar cheese soup.  I feel much better now!  I know this will stay with me longer.  He also explained why my blood sugar keeps going up even though I am not eating (my liver is releasing the stored carbs because I am not getting any carbs...who knew!) and why I am so tired in the afternoon (basically the same reason).  I feel so much better now that I have spoken to him...He is great at this job!
