Please read up on information from Andrea U.  about vitamin supplimentation.

As well you can read:
www.asbs.org/Newsite07/resources/bgs_final.pdf  it is kinda dry reading but very vital to our well being that we properly supplement ourselves after RNY/DS surgery.

Nichole,
When I made my decision to have WLS, I thought the band was what I wanted as well. Then, I found out that my insurance does not cover it if you are over a 50 BMI. I was a 53. I was very scared of the RNY, but I was more scared of the way my health was going. I was to the point that I didn't want to leave the house because of the way I felt. I decided to go ahead with the RNY and could not be happier! So far, I have not had any problems and I have lost 45 lbs in a little over 2 months. My legs no longer hurt, I have more energy and I feel so much better. It is true that all surgeries are dangerous. Just be sure to research your doctor well.
Best of luck to you,
Tonya

MSW will not settle

: -p Hi,

I know its hard not to be sad or get mad but think about the historical results of each surgery. No doubt they call the bypass the "gold standard" for a reason.

Also think about how much safer all surgeries have gotten year after year. When I first found this website ther was a 2% mortality rate. Now bariatric procedures are some of the safest surgeries around. Most bariatric surgeons perform so many of these that they have superior expertise. Keep the risks in perspective and when fears start bouncing off your brain remind them of the facts.

I was very afraid of the bypass but further research changed my mind. Now its the band I don't want strictly based on the pros and cons of each.

If rearranging your plumbing still does not sit well with you, a restrictive procedure like the vertical sleeve gastrectomy that can later be converted to a bypass or left as is may be an option. That is the route I am taking since I probably don't qualify for the bypass right now.

I learned about this surgery because I was sad too when I was approved for a surgery I absolutley did not want. I should have had my surgery back in July. I'm dissapointed and mad but its worth the wait to find the right surgeon with expertise in the second choice procedure I want.

You'll be doing your homework again girl but take it from me four months after I should have been done. Its worth it. : -p

Band to DS

Unfortunately, I had to delete this post due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!
