Hey everyone. I am so sad right now. I went to the Seminar last night and I started crying as soon as it was over. I found out that Medicade pays for Lap Band and Realize band BUT only if your BMI is under 50. I have been crying alot today. I am so upset over this. My BMI is a 72 so looks like my only choice right now is Gastric. The sleeve and DS is something I defintley wouldnt do so I guess Gastric it is... I had my heart set on this band. I really feel in my heart that Band is for me but what else can I do? I have to do SOMETHING. I am so scard of Gastric though. But its like I was telling my BFF, I have a higer chance of dieing now with a heart attack than I do with getting Gastric Bypass...

Anyways, just wanted to share how it went last night. I am really sad and disappointed

Hi, Please don't be sad. I had the gastric by-pass (r-n-y with fobie pouch) and am happy , happy ,happy. I even had my done open to get it. My Dr. offered to put a lap band in doing it lap. but I really wanted the r-n-y and was willing to have the surgery done open. I don't know if it is true but....I was told , you loose  more weight faster with e r-n-y. And for higher BMI's they recomend the r-n-y.  Only you can make the final decision but I am very happy with my r-n-y.
Good Luck

Nichole,

I am 1 year and 3 months out from bypass. My insurance wouldn't cover the band so I chose GP. I'm so glad I did. I haven't had any problems. I'm down from 256 to 149 or size 22 to 9. It's amazing. I don't have any regrets. I actually think it was a blessing to get the bypass. There is no way I would have gotten to where I am with the band. This surgery does work. It's not an easy process but well worth it. I'd be glad to talk offline or chat online.

Good look and things work out the way they are supposed to!!!!

I am so sorry you are upset. I wanted the lap band but at the time my insurance only covered RNY.. which was a blessing in disguise because I would of cheated my way with the band. I had RNY last September and do not regret it at all. I know its scary but I do not have any more high blood pressure and no more metabolic syndrome!! I have lost 106 lbs and feel fantastic! Best of luck to you!!

I first looked at LapBand and really thought that was what I wanted BUT when I found out that RNY could be done laparascopically and that I wouldn't have to go have fills using a needle (I hate/loathe/fear needles) I couldn't be happier.

Read as much as you can and ask questions so you'll be sure of your decision. Good Luck on whatever you decide.

You know, you should really look into the other kinds of WLS, especially the duodenal switch.  It is WAY more succesful than the lap band.  Plus there are so many people who get either the RNY or lap band and end up getting a revision to the DS.

To me, you've been relieved of a surgery for a device that doesn't have a very high success rate.  Go to the DS forum, and the revision forum, and the WLS regrets forum, and see how many people have failed with RNY and LB and are getting a DS.  And notice how few people have failed to lose all their weight once they have a DS.

Hi Nancy,

DS is specifically excluded from Medicaid, so it's not an option if you are insured through Medicaid as Nichole is.

Barbara..... .effective 7/1/08 Medicaid changed its requirements and now allows for the DS as well.

but ....... since surgeon's claim to do the DS in NC the only choice is a Dr. in NC, otherwise I would be getting the DS myself.

I think from here on out I'll just leave all medicaid issues to the expert!
