Changing Body
My RNY was August 22, 2008...best decision I've ever made in my life; however, my body is acting crazy. I'm down 53 pounds now and I am having some battles....
I've been struggling with constipation and the iron supplements make it worse; Getting iron now is really important becauseBefore the RNY, I went 15 years without having a
menstrual cycle....well, now I've had one for 5 weeks which is really driving me out of my mind and I feel week.
Any suggestions about the constipation and some ways to help it and be able to take the iron?

Hi Sonya,
Congratulations on your fantastic success. You might want to contact your physician and see if you can take Miralax which is what was prescribed for me. It worked well and gently.

First of all, congrats on a successful surgery! :) Did your Dr put you on colace or anything? Especially since you're taking iron supplements. Make sure you're getting enough fiber and enough fluids - but maybe call your Dr about something to help with the constipation.
Also, having your cycle for 5 weeks doesn't sound right, and certainly isn't going to help you any. I think you should talk to your Dr about that too. Sometimes our bodies just get stuck. I had PCOS before surgery and sometimes would go for 6 months without one and sometimes would have one for 3-4 weeks. My Dr always said those extra long cycles weren't actual productive cycles - they're just dumping blood (which is the last thing you need right now.) Maybe you need some progesterone to spur a real period that will start and end in a week? I don't want to diagnose you or tell you what to do...just a suggestion. 5 weeks sounds like too long to be bleeding. Lord knows, you deserve to feel good - Good luck!

i am having constipation issues at the moment myself and my nurse couldnt stress hydration enough. she said before they called anything in or made any big decision with medication that i should step my water intake, which i have done (still struggling but im getting there!) and my issues are getting much better. just a simple step that might help.... drink water!! :)
