Finally, a little tinge of.......
...... excitement!
I went to see my PCP today. I brought with me two scientific papers about DS for him to look over because I wasn't sure how familiar he was with the procedure.
I asked him my hard questions. "Even though the only co-morbidity I have is high blood pressure, should I have this surgery?" and "Or should I wait to see if I develop diabetes?"
To the second question he said, "NO." There is enough diabetes in my family to expect that it is only a matter of time before it presents. We talked more about the surgery, complications, and he said, "I think you should move ahead toward getting this surgery."
I didn't realize how much his opinion would mean to me, but I have to say, it's a tremendous relief. He's one of the most intelligent, caring doctors I've ever met. He has cared for me and my husband for about 8 years, and he knows how many times I've tried to lose weight.
I said to him, "I really value your opinion, because I know you're not selling these procedures, like the DS surgeon." Now, I don't mean to insult the surgeons, but after all, it's hard not to "sell" something when you're in that business.
So, even though my husband isn't particularly excited, I feel such relief to know what my doctor thinks.
Thank you to everyone who patiently, kindly answered my questions. I think I am going to go ahead consulting with Dennis Smith in GA. I was interested in Anthone, but I don't want "open" surgery. I was interested in Husted, but he's in Kentucky now and the hospital he's working out of doesn't have very high ratings. I may try to convince Dr. Smith to give me a slightly longer common channel, perhaps 150 to 200 cm.
I hope I'm a little more stable now, and continue pursuing the DS without any more huge setbacks such as the one I got from the anti-WLS website.
Thank you all again,
Nancy

My ER trip was due to BP. I thought I was having a heart attack. It was about 8 months before my wls. My wls has brought only good things into my life. My BP id stable now and I prob. could go off the BP pills but I am not ready yet.
The trip to the ER helped my family to see the need for wls

Nancy,
I dont know too much about DS but from my point of view I know I did the right thing.
Yes I deal with head hunger and yes I deal with constipation daily but in my heart and soul I know I did the right thing.
I dont think you should wait to see if diabetes will surface for you.
I always tell people I never really knew how sick I was till after surgery.
I was taking 4 shots a day before surgery.
I also tell people you HAVE to want wls more than anything you have ever wanted before.
I chose to have my life back.

Nancy, I am so glad that your PCP's support has given you much needed comfort about the prospect of WLS. I know just what you mean. When I looked into having WLS a few years ago and talked myself out of it, there was something so different about my PCP actually RECOMMENDING it this time! Sounds like you went in very well prepared and asked all the right questions. Good luck with finding the perfect surgeon to do the perfect surgery for YOU! Much love to ya! We'll have to try to get together soon. :) (P.S. A group of us ladies are riding down to the Hickory support group Thursday. They are having a clothing exchange and protein potluck that night. You are always welcome to come! Also, I went to the Mission support group this past week and plan on attending it regularly. Would love to see you there as well!)
