For the Diabetic's
Cindy
Cindy,
Call your Dr. and/or dietician associated with your program. When I had my surgery I had an HbA1c of 7.8, down from the high of 9.3. I was on 3 meds. When I went home from the hospital they had stopped two of my meds and cut one in half. Over the next few weeks my glucose numbers continued to drop. I now have an HbA1C that is 5.2. It can take some time for the improvements to occur and they will vary from patient to patient. Yours is probably complicated by the infections and other health issues with which you are struggling.
When I was actively diabetic, I know that I had to eat something in the evening to ensure that my numbers would stay level during the night and not spike. I don't know when you have your last 'protien' supplement meal, but you might check with your Dr. to see if you need to have one late in the evening to help keep your glucose levels steady. I don't think that the levels are going up because you are injesting things you shouldn't. Our pancreas will send a signal for an insulin release if it sees our glucose levels drop too low and that may be what's happening at night. When that happens, it causes your glucose levels to rise ... This maybe what's happening. I'm not sure. You need to see your Dr. to get a medical opinion and advice to manage your glucose levels.
Please let me know what happens when you talk with your dr.

In my experience, the endocrinologists don't have much experience with bariatric patients yet. I'm sure that will change with time. I'm glad you are getting the support you need.
All the best,

Aren't you currently on prednisone for your pulmonary problems? Prednisone (steroids) will make your glucose levels go up - Be sure you are getting in enough fluids - that will help in all kinds of ways - the blood sugar, the dehydration, the breathing - everything! So drink, or sip continually while you are awake. Also aren't you on antibiotics? same problem with glucose levels.
Contact your doc - they are the ultimate expert on all medical problems...
And you are not whining!
