How did your sugar do after surgery? I am so confused about how mine is running high when I'm hardly eating. At bedtime last night it was 130 and just a few hours later in the am it is 205 and I have had nothing to eat or drink in between. Maybe its because I'm sick. If you read my other post from last night I guess I'm still whinning lol. Thanks for any replies.

Cindy,

Call your Dr. and/or dietician associated with your program. When I had my surgery I had an HbA1c of 7.8, down from the high of 9.3. I was on 3 meds. When I went home from the hospital they had stopped two of my meds and cut one in half. Over the next few weeks my glucose numbers continued to drop. I now have an HbA1C that is 5.2. It can take some time for the improvements to occur and they will vary from patient to patient. Yours is probably complicated by the infections and other health issues with which you are struggling.

When I was actively diabetic, I know that I had to eat something in the evening to ensure that my numbers would stay level during the night and not spike. I don't know when you have your last 'protien' supplement meal, but you might check with your Dr. to see if you need to have one late in the evening to help keep your glucose levels steady. I don't think that the levels are going up because you are injesting things you shouldn't. Our pancreas will send a signal for an insulin release if it sees our glucose levels drop too low and that may be what's happening at night. When that happens, it causes your glucose levels to rise ... This maybe what's happening. I'm not sure. You need to see your Dr. to get a medical opinion and advice to manage your glucose levels.

Please let me know what happens when you talk with your dr.

Barb

Hey Barb, thanks for the advice! I was told today that they were up because of the infections I have and was told how to take my insulin and keep a record of time, what I took. Completely different from what the diabetic doctor was having me to do, but the nurse said that some of the diabetic doctors don't really understand how it all works with the weight loss surgery patient. Anyway they want my diabetic doctor to call them and they can tell them what they have me doing.

In my experience, the endocrinologists don't have much experience with bariatric patients yet. I'm sure that will change with time. I'm glad you are getting the support you need.

All the best,

Barb

Cindy,

Aren't you currently on prednisone for your pulmonary problems?  Prednisone (steroids) will make your glucose levels go up - Be sure you are getting in enough fluids - that will help in all kinds of ways - the blood sugar, the dehydration, the breathing - everything!  So drink, or sip continually while you are awake.  Also aren't you on antibiotics?  same problem with glucose levels.

Contact your doc - they are the ultimate expert on all medical problems...

And you are not whining!

No Shelia I can't take steroids ever again but the breathing treatments and inhalers probably aren't helping with my sugars from what the nurse told me today.

I am no expert about this but I understand in burning fat our liver uses it to make glucose and does release it at night. Its possible you still need some meds for a while until you are stablized. Of course you need to work this all out with your doctor. Mine has begun to stablize at around 95 - 105 overnight without meds but mine was not that bad yet before I had surgery. I did take 1000 Metformine until a week before surgery. I had to stop a week before because of the low carb diet I was on for the two weeks prior because I got low numbers in the 60s. But now in spite of the small amount of food I am eating my numbers stay up where they need to be so its coming from somewhere.

The nurse said it was from the infection I have.

Oddly I never had sugar issues like my sibblings and mother did before surgery.  Now I am having real issues keeping it up.  It is nothing for me to be in the 60's.  Only one time in the last 3 weeks when I tested did it run just over 100 (late day)  Most times it's in the 60 and 70's and I do eat carbs, yet I don't think think I am eating right.  Needless to say I have been the same weight for the last 4 months.  I don't feel good, addle brained most times and my eye sight is terrible.  I do have an encronogyist app't in November.
