OT: Prayers needed

Many of you may remember that about a year ago my nephew, Steven married his beloved Paige. They have been expecting their first baby, due January 24, 2009. While in CA, after my son's wedding Paige started bleeding. She was put on bedrest and about a week after returning to NC was hospitalized in Jacksonville because she continued to bleed. Last week she was transfered to a hospital in Wilmington that has comprehensive NICU. I got a call from my sister, Norma last night. She said that Paige had been continuing to bleed and that they had started giving her steriods to prepare baby Grace's lungs for an early entry. Unfortunately, Paige threw a large blood clot and her Dr's were concerned that for Paige's immediate health and safety, so they decided to do an emergency C-section. Paige and Grace both survived the C-section, but Grace's lungs are very immature and she's struggling. I think that Norma said that Grace is about 1 lb. 6 ounces. The Dr's will do a brain scan to check Grace soon. Norma will be flying in tomorrow. If she comes into Raleigh, I'll pick her up and drive her down to Wilmington to the hospital or to Jacksonville, whichever she needs and wants. As soon as I know which hospital she's in or more about either Paige's condition or Grace's, I'll be in touch. I may send text messages instead of emails if I'm unable to use the computer due to connectivity issues. My heart is breaking for them all. Please keep Steven, Paige and their sweet little baby Grace close in thought and prayer.Barb

Barb,

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. Just remember they are in God's hands.
If they are at New Hanover Hospital there is a place like a computer lab where family can use the computers, I know my sons where using them, just ask at the info desk.

Hugs,
Cindy

Barb,  My husband and I will have Grace and Paige in our thoughts and will be anxious to hear updates from you.  My husband's co-worker's daughter just gave birth to a baby boy around the same gestation as Grace.  He is Russian and my husband says he can't get all the info he'd like to know from him, but that, "Baby is strong!" and that it seems he is doing well for such a tiny one.  I hope the same for Grace!  Both my boys almost came pre-term at 25/26 weeks gestation.  I was also on the steroids to mature their lungs, sent via ambulance to the best NICU hospital in Indy, hubby toured it to prepare and saw the tiny babies (I didn't)...but the thing we learned most through each was that in the 10 years between the boys the medical advancements were miraculous and here our youngest is now 8...it is *AMAZING* what they can do for those little babies to give them a really good fighting chance and a good start to life!  I sincerely hope that Grace is on her way to growing and developing into a healthy, beautiful little girl.  Is Page recovering okay from the blood loss and clot issue?  Big hugs to you all!

Hi Shauna,

My own sons were born at 32 weeks and did beautifully ... as evidenced by our family photos. Who would ever guess that they were such tiny, scrawny little fighters.

You are so very right about all of the medical advances that they have made over the years, but alas it was not enough to help our dear Grace. She passed away earlier this evening.

Paige is recovering well from her emergency surgery. She was opened uncermoniously from stem to stern, so will always have to have a c-section for any following pregnancies. Otherwise, she is physically starting the healing process. However, her heart must be breaking.

My heart just aches for the pain that I know that her young parents are enduring.

Thank you for your kindness.
