Just to chime in ... Be sure that you get an appointment sooner than later and if a sleep apnea study hasn't been done ask for it post haste. My mother has developed pulmonary fibrosis due to her own unchecked GERD and hiatal hernia. The pulmonary scaring is irreversable and she's now on oxygen to help her breath. You are young and it's likely much earlier in the disease process for you, but don't let it go. When I took her her in for a mnometry ... a type of acid reflux study, and then a gastro procedure, her gastroenterologist said that it is critical that she use a CPAP and that she sleep with the head of her bed elevated. Please ask your Dr. about these things.
Wishing you all the best,
Barb
P.S. Suzanne and Ann are absolutely right, your GERD and if you have it, sleep apnea, are just additional reason TO have the surgery because the are considered comorbidities. So don't worry, instead of inhibiting your ability to have the surgery, they actually will probably enhance the chances that you'll get insurance approval. If you do have sleep apnea, start using the CPAP and you will probably need to take to the hospital with you so that you can use it following surgery ... of course, cross that bridge when you get to it.
