DS or RXY?
ok friends..I am addicted to this board!!!
I havent even been to my first appt, but this is so interesting..
I looked at the DS board..they say you keep the weight off longer but is it more of a serious surgery?
I see where some RXY people have surgery again later..
I'll be honest with you..(thats what I like about ya'll bc I can be honest & you can relate...LOL)
I am never home..I live in the middle of fast food city..it's just me & my daughter so we eat out all the time (bad bad I know) I dont drink or smoke or pARty , so for social life we eat..My hang ups are Mt.dew & sweets..dont like many veggies or fruits..(I know....please dont scream at me...just being honest)soooooo
can I do the RXY..will it work for me? your opinion...I know I have to work with it. I know its not a magic wand.I know I will have to make changes....just some input of ur thoughts for me..

If you are planning on keeping with the fast food postop (and be completely honest with yourself), then the DS is a much better option.
The areas of the intestines that are bypassed means fat is much more malabsorbed than the RNY, thus making it a "health food".
DS'ers *can* eat sweets, and will not lose on simple carbs (they absorb almost all of those calories), so if you are afraid of falling back on sweets, keep that in mind.
However, do not plan on dumping to curb your sweet tooth.. only about 30% of RNY patients dump.
The DS has shown clinically to keep more excess weight loss off compared to the RNY.
It is much easier to outeat the RNY than the DS.
The DS will allow you to take NSAIDs and time-release medications.. RNY does not.
Both require stringent supplementation.. don't let *anyone* tell you otherwise.

I agree with Andrea about the fast food and being honest with yourself, I'm glad you're weighing out your options and being truthful with yourself. There are some good choices at some of the fast food resturants but it's hard to make the right choices every time. For me I wouldn't have done as well if I had done the DS, I was in San Diego my first 3 years Post Op and there was Fast Food all around at my fingertips... I had to get it in my mind to pack a healthy lunch/snacks before I'd go anywhere and really stick with it. I'm 6 years Post Op now and haven't had any 2nd surgery (as far as WLS goes). I was and still am a chocoholic and that is my downfall, but I know my limits also. I used to be a Dr Pepper, Fast Food (bigtime) and Ice Cream person but my tastes have changed dramatically and I now can't stand Dr Pepper (even diet) and Ice Cream makes me feel bad, so I just stay away. I still like a hamburger once in a while but I just can't eat nearly as much. I now love things I didn't like prior to WLS... Ya never know, you may end up liking those veggies and fruit!!! Sorry I couldn't give you a cut and dry answer but this is definately a personal choice. Oh... I have gained a little weight back (25lbs) but I'm back on track and have lost 8 of that 25... my tool still works... I love my RNY!!!
I wish you luck! Keep us posted!!!

My suggestion is the get a copy of Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and that Before and After book. You are the only one who can decide how your life will be post op. Most doctors will not do sugery on you if you intened to eat fast food and continue with these bad habits.
I would have liked to get DS but only Lap Band and RNY were covered by my health insurance.
Good Luck with your choice!
