OT: Sarah's surgeon and we couldn't be more delighted!

Just a quick note to let you know that Sarah met w/Dr Feldman this morning and had a great appointment. He took some XRays and confirmed that all is well and she didn't do any serious damage when she fell at the wedding. It looks like she just strained it and that the swelling is causing the discomfort. He doesn't need to see her again for this leg for about 9 months, so that will be late spring of '09. She also talked to him about doing the right leg because it dislocates about 4 to 6 times a year to the extent that she is thrown to the ground. He said that while he really likes patients to wait 6 months between surgeries, she can do whenever she is ready because she's able to hop on the left leg at this time. We aren't sure when she'll do the right leg. He'd like her to continue to work on developing strength and flexibility in the left leg. We talked about the difficulty she had with pain management following the last surgery. He said that since she seems to have difficulty with pain management that he'll probably have her use toradol even though he usually doesn't use it becaue it inhibits bone growth. He and we are absolutely delighted with Sarah's progress. Barb

Hi Annie,

I will certainly pass on your sentiments to Sarah.

I'm delighted that the administrative arm of the program at Duke seems to have turned the corner. I have never had any concerns or qualms about the technical/medical program, but the admistratitive issues have created a cloud that appears to be moving so that the sun can shine through.

I am sure that Ben will be getting the very best care when he undergoes his surgery this fall.

Thanks again,

Barb

Hi Alice,

You are so right about being relieved and pleased.

We are enjoying the beautiful fall weather as we do some back to school bargain hunting for Sarah.

Im glad that both you and Sarah received some good news today and it was nothing serious with her leg.  She will know when the time is right to have the other leg operated on, in the mean time you both will be in my prayers.

THanks Rahsheeda,

As you say, she will know when and if the time is right to do the other leg. It is an incredibly painfull surgery that leaves an HUGE, unsightly scar. But it also will give her the stability that she has never had. It's a personal decision that only she can make, but it is every bit as life-changing for her as ours are for us. As always, I will be here to support whatever decision she might make.

Thanks again,

Barb

Barb,

That is fabulous news!  I'm so glad that she didn't do any irreversible damage.  Now you guys can make the decision about if/when you're ready to go ahead with the right leg.  Not to mention it seems that the surgeon has addressed the problems she dealt with the first time around, and will adjust to hopefully keep the pain from being so unbearable.

Congrats on a successful visit!
