A question
I never had this problem till after surgery and that is constipation.
The oatmeal and flax seed was helping and I still eat that almost everymorning now.
My question is I bought was I thought was just regular Colace at Walmart the other day but when I got home and looked at the bottle it says Pericolace.
What Pericolace is it is a stool softener with a laxative stimulant.
I know it is not a good thing to get hooked on laxitives but I have to admit it does the trick for me and I feel like a new woman every morning.
I reason this out in my head by saying "I am no longer wired like a normal person any more."
"Maybe it is ok to take this stuff every night to help give my new system a little boost".
Any advice would be good.

I have a new name for pericolace I am calling it "Mommy's little helper"

Annie, I wouldn't continue to take the laxative stimulant. The way I understand it is, your muscles will become completely reliant on it and will no longer work at all on their own. It's okay to use on occasion, but not regularly.
I am either one extreme or the other and have dealt with this for so many years. I even have a prolapsed colon which I've had surgery for once before and need again. My gastro put me on Mira-Lax with a prescription in January but it's idential to the OTC stuff. He said that what it does is keeps "moisture in the bowel" so it can move better naturally and man, does it work. I've found that I can take a dose each morning for awhile, but then if that quits doing the job, I add another dose in the evening until things are moving like they were, then I go back down to one morning dose. I alternate the one or two doses as needed. For the first time in my life, I am getting relief! I like mixing mine with a tiny bit of apple juice in water for flavor.
You might try that and see how it works for you. I will say that no fiber type supplement ever worked for me at all so I am very thankful this has!

I am glad you brought up this problem. I had my surgery 4 weeks ago today and I have that problem. I have tried supositories and they worked a little and last night I was going to try Milk of Magnesia, but didn't feel I could drink the 2 to 4 tablespoons of it. Is the Colace in liquid or pill form. Any other suggestions would be helpful

Rachel,
The colace is in pill form I am not sure if it comes in liquid or not.
I have tried the Miralax and it is great suff but I found It to take two days for relief.
I will talk to my pcp about taking Miralax more than once a day.
Also Miralax you can mix with any liquid hot or cold and it is tastless.

Yes, the Miralax can be mixed with anything. I mix it with my chocolate soy milk, V8 juice, etc. I find my favorite is the little bit of apple juice in water...I get better "results!" haha
I was given the colace after the birth of all my children, but it never helped me. I know it does help some people otherwise they wouldn't make it, right?!
I take the Miralax every single day and will probably have to for life. I can definitely tell when I miss just one day's dosage so I try hard to never forget. My gastro said I can increase to twice a day if I needed to, but thankfully I don't have to do that continually. Let me know if you go with the Miralax, Annie, and how that works for you. FYI, even though I can get it OTC, I have asked my PCP to continue prescribing it for me since it's cheaper that way. It is $20 OTC but only costs $10 with my prescription card for the exact same strength and amount.

Hey Annie,
My secret weapon of choice is sugar free Metamucil. I am currently SUPER regular and don't go a day without it. I take meds for my arthritis that can cause "issues" in that department...plus I LOVE CHEESE! LOL
Try it! Take it faithfully for a few daze before awesome results. You won't regret it, my friend. I don't miss a single day.
xoxo
