RMR tested-(Long)

Yesterday I went to a nutritionist and had my RMR tested.   I have been so frustrated because I have just about completed my "honeymoon" phase and still have 50-75 lbs to loose to be in the normal weight range.  I have been in the 230 range since my one year anniversary in March.  When I have spoken to the surgeon and program nutritionist they just tell me I am already a success with the approximately 165 lb lose I have already obtained.  As much as I feel this is true, I just can't past the feeling of failure until I reach "normal".  So I paid for the RMR test and now I am more confused then ever.

I now average 1400 calories a day and haven't lost but about 10 lbs in the last 6 months.  But the RMR and nutritionist I saw said if I do nothing but stay in bed all day, I need 1760 calories.  With the normal daily activity level factored in my calorie intake should be at least 1800 calories and increased if I exercise that day.  And I should still loose 1 to 1.5 lbs a week.

First of all my pouch dictates the amount I put in each time and not one bite more or it all comes back up.  So getting in 1800 calories will be difficult for me.  Second of all I am scared to death to increase my calories that high.

I also still have a very low tolerance for sugar (8 grams or less per serving), white flour and sugar alcohols.

I would appreciate all words of advise from anyone with experience with the RMR and weight loss.

I personally think it is stupid to pay for advise then not follow through, why go if you will doubt, but I find myself right where I have judged others in the past.......Thanks, Goody

Hey Goody,

It's good to see you. I understand your frustration. I have noticed that surgeons/programs seem to be 'happy' once you've reached the statistical goal of 60 to 80 percent of your weight loss, even though you'd like it to get lower. As you know I've had other issues where I've had my RMR checked. While I also have challenges with restriction, I have found ways to get in  about 2000 or more calories a day. I eat about 6 times a day. I have more carbs and fat than protien in order to get in the higher calorie content. I eat things that allow me to boost the calorie intake, which sometimes means eating 'slider' foods that allow me to consume more and/or drinking with meals, which again allows me to consume more. Like you, I'm concerned about consuming too much and/or having regain issues, but I continue to track what I consume to ensure that I maintain awareness which I think will be key to my longterm success. I'm just wondering out loud, so just take my ramblings for the little that they are worth ... I'm wondering it you need a higher calorie count so that your body will release some of the extra weight. I know that uping my consumption often helped me boost my weight loss when I had issues with stalls ...not sure if that is an issue and/or would work, but it might worth a try. Also, I'd be sure that you are adding aerobic and strength training to your days/weeks, because it will cause your metabolism to reset and burn at a higher rate.

Wishing you success,

Hugs,

Barb

Thanks Barb for your advise.  I think since I will continue to "get the same old thing if I do the same old thing",  I will need to try by slowly increasing my caloric intake.  I know I will not be happy until I am "normal" and after reflecting some today, I realize maybe I have bee exhausted, frustrated and stressed out because my body needs more nutrition.

I have been poked, probed and given blood for everything imaginable with the general consensus being:

1. I have reached that "age" where hormones interfere (read: onset of possible menopause)
2. The only deficiency I have is vitamin D, which I now take a prescription.

So now I need to pull up my boot straps and march on.

Again thanks so very much,
Carrie

Hi Carrie,
I have read that the body will hold on for dear life to the fat if it feels it is in starvation mode.
I dosent sound right but research has shown it to be true.
I had a hard time imagining how could I ever get 2000 calories in a day.
Once I started to record my intake I found it isnt that hard to do.
BTW how is cat doing?

Annie you are sooo sweet!  My Maggie Mae is so old, but she is still doing her best to get through each day.  She gets lost in the house alot and is always crying for me, so I have to go get her and calm her down.   The other 2 "girls" just stay away from her now.  They used to antagonize her but have decided when you are blind and deaf you aren't much fun anymore.

Have you actually increased your intake to 2000 calories daily?  I know you exercise a lot more than I do.   I am going to really track all food/drink/exercise for the next few weeks and see what I am doing.  My nutritionist for the surgeon doesn't want you to count calories.  So I will need to implement my own intake schedule.

Thanks so much for your reply......................Carrie

Hi Carrie,
I am burning between 1300-1500 caories 5 times a week my range of calories get between 1800-2000.
I use sparkpeople.com I know there are other programs out there but I find sparkpeople very helpful because I can also track my fitness too.
I used to just read carbs on labels and protien.
I have learned calorie counting is important for me.
Sparkpeople also tracks the protien and fat and carbs ect...
I love the articles and the exersise videos too.

Also you can get trophys by earning points.
The trophys are pictures but hey what ever works.
I have earned 3 trophys and working on my 4th trophy.
600 more points and it is mine. LOL
