Hi Koko,

It depends to a certain extent on the program that you are with, but you will probably need to see psychiatrist that has specific experience with WLS patients. They are really there to help you, not to throw roadblocks in your way. They will assess your knowledge of the procedure and the likely impacts that it may have on your life. They will also look to see if you have realistic expectations of the surgery, the process and how it all will impact, effect and affect your life. If they think you need help, support or more information, they may suggest or even require certain things ... I have severe clinical depression, so they required that I see a counselor on a regular basis to ensure that I had the support I'd need to successfully navigate this journey. It all went well.

Re: Advice. Be honest with them. Articulate your concerns and how you intend to manage any issues you might feel you need to address. Remember that they are here to help you.

Wising you all the best,

Barb

Barb,

I didn't know you had clinical depression too.  I do also which is part of the reason I'm getting this surgery.  I need the forced restriction because when I'm in a rough patch, which doesn't happen too terribly often, I don't care and just eat, eat, eat.

We'll have to talk about this sometime!

Hi Vickie,

I'm sorry that you have this issue as well, but having the restriction will help put the breaks on volume of consumption as long as you are consuming dense foods. You can still consume soft and/or slider foods, but I have found ... so far, that I'm generally doing a better job of making better choices most of the time. I still really struggle with depression and honestly had a significant depressive episode that was unrelated to me WLS, but put me through the ringer this past year. The good news is that I was able to lose through it and not eat myself into oblivion as I had so many times before. I have a book and workbook that I purchased that is a 6 week program that I'm still working on that has been a great help. It's called the Beck Diet Solution, by Dr. Judith Beck and it's a book and workbook.

Wishing you all the best,

Barb

If you use Dr. Miles he refers his patients to Dr. Cambell in Wilmington.  He is very nice and I enjoyed my session.  I didn't use Dr. Miles but I used Dr. Cambell because it was a lot closer then my doctor.  Good Luck on your journey.

My insurance company sent me to one that was in my network, my doctor had no say in it. I loved the guy I went too, he was friendly and funny and worked on Sundays!!! The test too me was funny... you will see what I mean when you take it
