He is an excellent surgeon, has a great staff and is in a Center of Excellence. His partner, Dr. Chapman is my surgeon, whom I chose because he had operated on my husband 4 times for cancer related stuff.
I also work here at the Brody School of Medicine and Dr. Pender has an excellent reputation among the physicians and staff. I don't think you can go wrong with him.
Good luck and it's perfectly normal to be nervous! I can tell you from my experience, having RNY is the best decision I ever made for my health. I would do it again!

Dr. Pender did my surgery on 08/08/08. He is awesome! I will tell you that he is to the point. Not meaning that bad but he is. He will answer any questions for you but his answers are to the point. He did such an awesome job on my surgery. I have 0 pain, left the hospital with 0 pain meds (by choice) and I honestly have to remind myself that I had surgery a month ago. I feel absolutely wonderful. He expects his patients to follow his orders and they seem to be pretty strict. Expect to go on the Optifast liquid diet at least 2 weeks prior to surgery and drinking Optisource after the surgery. In saying that I would think that it is probable another dr within their office will probably follow the same pre surgery stuff, etc.
He is awesome! We are fortunate that we have some really good docs out there doing this.
Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks for posting your question Horseplay. I am also in the pre-op phase with Dr. Pender. Thanks also for everyone's replies. I have lots of confidence in Dr. Pender, but it's still nice to hear more positive things. Also, his staff has been really nice!
I actually have my NUT, Upper GI and Anesthesia appointments tomorrow. I go to the Psych Eval late in October, but I am trying to get in earlier if at all possible. Wish me luck!

My DH is currently going through all the tests to have Dr. Pender do his lap band surgery. Our PCP had recommended Dr. Chapman, but he was out with personal issues when we began. We have met Dr. Pender twice and like him. He hasn't done as many lap bands as I would like to see, but by the time we are done with this journey, his numbers should be higher.
I'm not quite sure where you got your information from about Dr. Pender having alot of complications?!?! He is one of the BEST!! That is entirely false, he has a GREAT reputation for successful Post Op surgery AS LONG AS THE PATIENT DOES WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!!! He has a protocol and strongly EXPECTS his patients to comply with the protocol, if they do, they will have great success!! If they DON'T then they will have problems and complications due to their own negligence, but that goes with ANY surgeon!! He also is VERY serious in the begining because he wants everyone to know how serious this surgery is and once he sees that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing and having great success, he turns into a totally different person!! He is much more laid back and personable, but in the begining expect cut throat honesty and absolutley no excuses with him...YOU WON'T WIN..LOL thats what he once told me
Dr. Pender did my surgery 6 months ago, just met with him Monday for my 6 month and he was laughing and soo happy with my success!! I have not had one single complication, thus far and since starting my journey I am down 121lbs. 112lbs of those are from the last 6 1/2 months......SOOOOOO I am one of Dr. Penders many success stories!! I wish you the best of luck and know that the ECU Brody School team is AWESOME!!! But overall it is your choice. When I got on Obesity Help...I was the 2nd person on here that had Dr. Pender from the N.C. board...Lynn was the first :) soo i didn't have many people to ask, actually I had no one, so I went on my journey with Dr. Pender alone and uninformed and I wouldn't change a single thing!!!!
