Getting back on track

Could you please send me as many vibes as you can spare to help me get back on track?

While my husband was off work for four days last week, and we've been run ragged with so much going on, I've not been counting my calories and adhering to the eating plan I'd intended for myself.  I've gained 2 pounds back and am just thankful it isn't more than that.

My plan now, to get back on track, is to jump in feet-first tomorrow into a low-carb liquid fast.  I'm going to use protein shakes, sf protein drink mixes, veggie broth, sf jello, and sf popsicles.  I just feel I need to get real and go for it.

I'm hoping I will have surgery sometime between Oct. 16 and 31, so that would mean 6-8 weeks of this liquid fast.  That isn't so bad, is it?  I know if I'd gone with Mission Hospital's program, I would have been on Opti-Fast for at least that long!

Big congrats sent to everyone recuperating from surgery this week and a warm welcome to all the newbies to the forum!

You're going to make it. Lots of positive vibes coming your way. My Doc only required the Adkins Diet for the liver shrinking part of the pre-op diet. Every doctor is different as well as every patient is different so I completely understand your need to jumpstart the process.

For me personally I wouldn't start the liquid diet until the last possible moment. For the first few weeks after surgery that's what you'll be limited to as well. With that said - good luck on getting back on track and losing the recent gain.

Shauna,

Did you put yourself on this liquid diet?  If you did, I wouldn't pu****you'll have to be on liquids for a certain amount of time after surgery, and you don't want to be sick of it all before you even get started!  Believe me...it's hard enough to drink anything after surgery, not to mention if you're already bored with it!  :)  I would recommend that you try to adapt more of a healthy lifestyle right now, focusing on low-fat proteins, and good carbs, exercise, etc.

That said, whatever you decide to do will be a benefit to you.  Don't be too hard on yourself for last week.  You'll have days when you don't do everything the way you plan.  That's OK.  You are starting a new lifestyle, and in a lifestyle there is room for mistakes.  You've done the important part.  You realized the problem.  So now, you just pick up from here and do what you need to do!  No worries, this is not an all or nothing scenario right now.

Good luck from here, I know you'll be just fine!  :)

I'm going to make you feel a bit better.

There is no possible way that you've gained 2 lbs in 4 days.  Really, honest, truly.

What you've gained is *really* water weight.

When you went on your eating plan, I'm guessing it was lower in carbs than you are used to.  This allowed your muscles and liver to empty their glycogen stores (which has to be used up before you can begin to burn fat).  Well, glycogen requires a 4:1 ratio of water:glycogen in order for the body to process it for energy.  So for every pound of glycogen you get back, you'll need 4lbs of water.

So really, it is water weight, and will come off very quickly.  Just don't get into this habit and you'll be fine :-)

I do have a problem with you just doing a liquid fast.. you *need* some carbs in your life.. at the bare minimum, a preop should have at least 100g per day.  Your brain needs those carbs.  If you drop too far below 100g, you will go into ketosis, which is ok while being monitored, isn't a whole lot of fun just for the heck of it.  Eat some carbs.

And yes, you can do it.

Shauna,

I agree with everyone else. I think you should do low carb or do 2-3 shakes/day and 1 meal. There is a program called modified optifast. It consist of 3 shakes, 6 oz protien 1 1/2 cups vegetables and then 1 fruit. Sounds like a lot of food but it really isnt and I know people that have lost with this.

As you know one of my co workers has been doing only shakes for 3-4 weeks and she is having her surgery at Mission on Wednesday. She will have 2-3 weeks more of liquids and 2 weeks mushies. I can see she is already bored.

I know that you want to have the surgery in October but it could possible be longer so don't get burned out.

Wow.  I'm really glad I came back to read the forum before heading out to the store.  Thank you one and all for snapping me out of my yo-yo-dieting mentality.  Yep, I've still got it.

My last weigh-in was actually 12 days ago and it's up 2 pounds since then, but I also have the scale from hell that can fluctuate that much in 3.5 seconds on any given day.

I am vegetarian, so I don't do high fat protiens, only consume low-fat dairy (but mostly soy), and I eat plenty of whole-grain, complex carbs.  (So why in heck do I have this weight problem?!)

My sciatica issue has been really kicking my butt and I've had to take more pain meds than my usual 1 per week just to get through our schedule lately.  I wanted so much to help over the weekend outside on our yard but oh my gosh, the pain was horrible everytime I would move, let alone bend over!  We are joining the gym again this month but at this point purposeful exercise is out of the question for me.  I *HOPE* for the day that it's not!

Thanks for helping me to see not to beat myself up.  It's difficult, but I will try!  I think I need to set mini-goals again like I did in the beginning.  The first thing needs to be no sugar or processed foods, because they have crept back in a tad bit.  I'm definitely beginning to feel out of control and I just want to reel myself back in.  Thank you for making me see I don't have to go off the deep end in order to do so!

P.S.  I also have like 50 mosquito bites on my legs and have had to take oral Benedryl to keep my sanity...which makes me very emotional.  So I may read this in a day or two and crack up at myself.  Hint:  Never post online when you aren't feeling 100%!!!  hehe

Hey, Shauna - sorry I haven't been online here to send you good positive vibes REAL TIME - I'm getting over being sick as a puppy, but I'm checking in now.

I also agree with the water weight gain thing.  I have been going up and down the same 2 lbs for a week and I'm fairly sure it's because I am not hydrated enough.  Good news is, there's no way you are going backward very far... I'm getting better myself about "letting go" of the yo yo mentality AND of any perceived failures.

You are right around the corner from your surgery and you are going to be in for a wonderful change!  I'm so excited (and even envious) for your RNY.

We'll catch up again soon, I hope...

Hey Shauna,

You'll be fine!  You can drop that two pounds with just a couple of days of "on track" eating.  When you think about eating the wrong foods, just go vist our favorite store...

Shauna,
I admire your determination but in my humble opinion I think just doing a liquid fast would be a shock to your system.
Also keep in mind many of us have a pouch and or band that makes doing just liquids easier.
I know many have to do a liquid fast before surgery I was lucky my surgeon did not require it nor a bowel prep.
Personally I would set a certain amount of calories with a high and low range and start recording your intake.
Also some sort of activity always is helpful.
It is always easier said than done I have been there a zillion times before with the best of intensions.
