I'm in insurance hell and can"t get out!

In August of 2007 I started considering weight loss surgery. My heart would no longer take the ups and downs of diet pills, and I just roller coasted on fad diets and exercise. I am insured under my husband's United Health Care Choice plan. We checked into our plan and Duke Weight Loss Surgery Center was accepted and RNY was covered. So I went through all the hoops- and even stayed somewhat patient and understanding through the administrative change at DWL.  My second submission was close but I had to cancel because UHC wanted 5 years worth of diet and nutrition and excercise notes from my PCP . Since I have moved from Charlotte to Goldston and also remarried that changed my insurance I had to gather notes from 3 different doctors. UHC also told me that 2008 did not count.  Deborah at Duke resubmitted  last week only to be told I needed a 6 month supervised diet and exercise program within the last 2 years. I can't figure out where this came from? Has anyone else been through this? UHC says it's Pfizer's requirement, not theirs. This is not explained in the SPD nor was is discussed or told to me before now.  Pfizer bought the company my husband works for last year, and maybe this is the problem. As of this morning I have an "Advocate"that is  to call within the the next few days. I wonder what they can do.HELP!!!!!

Well, my DH has Medicare and they require 6 mo supervised diet.  We knew this from the surgeon going in.  The rules are VERY specific, how often you have to see the doc, what he has to include in his notes, etc.  The surgeon gave us a sample of how the doc's notes had to read.  He has completed the 6 mo, but is still completeing tests, so he continues to go to his PCP monthly for his diet and exercise consult, just as a CYA.  We want to be sure the ins can't come back and say something wasn't right in one of his appointments.  Good luck with your "hoops" you have to jump through.  It can be done, just hang in there.
