Has anyone shrunk their clothes in the dryer...on purpose?!

I was doing laundry earlier today.  As I was carefully hanging my wet clothes to dry, I got to thinking...  I hang them because I DON'T want them to shrink, to cover my belly and my rolls.  BUT!  After the weight starts falling off, and my clothing starts to get too big, perhaps I COULD throw them into the dryer to dry to shrink them up to fit better?!  Has anyone else done this post-op?

Don't I wish I could. While a whole new world of clothing options opened up when I lost all the weight, I had quite a few gems that I'm going to hate to get rid of  ... as a matter of a fact, I may take a few to my tailor and see what she can do with 'em. Wouldn't it be great if we could just pop 'em in the dryer for a few minutes to shrink 'em down?

Thanks for the smile.

I was serious!  lol  I am definitely going to try drying some of my knit and cotton things in the dryer when they start getting too large for me to see if that works.  When something gets accidentally dried in the dryer I normally have to toss it into my donation stash.

Definitely see what your tailor can do for you, especially anything high quality.  My aunt was a seamstress and she had this one gal that would bring her all sorts of things to alter because she would buy a size or two too large for herself off of clearance racks...things that were just too good to pass up at $$$$ stores...and then my aunt would tailor them for her.  She would save a ton of money even after paying my aunt and she always looked dressed to kill.

Do you have a consignment store you could try taking the things you don't want to keep to?  I listed a huge lot of women's size clothing on CraigsList awhile back and sold it all for one price.  Heck, I should ask you what sizes you have on hand and how much $ you'd like to have for the items since we are the same height!

I remember when my sister shrunk a favorite sweater of mine accidently. She was always petite and I was always a chub ... at any rate, the sweater fit her when she shrunk it. I always accused her of doing it on purpose.

I don't know about doing it on purpose. I might be better to tailor or sell and purchase new because you never know how things will shrink.

I was and I guess still am an incredible clothes horse. I have stuff from size 24 on down. I have plenty of suits, dresses and even ball gowns and ladies tuxedo's in size 18 to 22. I'm going to have to inventory and figure out what to do with it all. It just seems a shame to just toss or give it all away, but I'll have to see.

I wish you every success as you make your way down the size ladder.

P.S. I have rather eclectic taste in clothes ... often somewhat bohemian, sometimes very concervative. Not sure how it will sell.

Hey Shauna!

I did try that, but it didn't really work too well.  Maybe after you lose the first few pounds but later it just doesn't shrink it enough.  I have given away ALOT of very nice clothes in the past few weeks to some of the guys at work.  I gave one guy 4 pair of Carhartt pants that were $45 each, and I bet I hadn't worn them maybe 3-4 times each!  I thought he was going to try to kiss me LOL!

I've tried it!  :)  It works for a few things (cheap cotton t-shirts, yoga pants, etc.)  But it only works for a short period of time.  Once you wear them, they tend to stretch out too much.  I will say though, that I do throw a lot more things in the dryer now because I'm not so worried about them being a little tighter, etc.

The biggest thing this has a factor with is jeans.  I have one pair that I love right out of the dryer.  But after wearing them for a day, I have to wash them again if I want them to fit...otherwise I'm looking at the baggy but syndrome!  :)  Ha Ha!

Anyway, the shrinking doesn't work long-term, but it can allow you to wear some things for a few more weeks while you're shrinking too!  :)

Hey Shauna.....It doesn't work or I have just put them in when they are already way to big.   It seems like every 6 to 8 weeks i am in a smaller size.   While this is great, it is also annoying and can be very epensive.   I have jeans, cotton knit shirts, etc that went in the dryer and didn't seem any smaller.   There is a gal at work who has laid claim to my big clothes tho so i know someone else will enjoy them.

Oh yeah, I sure have... especially when you're trying to get another few wears out of them before buying smaller sizes!

Unfortunately, I had to delete this message due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!
