Were you overweight your whole life?

I was very thin until I was about 7 or 8 years old.  I remember when I was in 2nd grade, some of the kids would wear shorts under their pants and change at school when it got hot.  I decided to do that too.  I came out of the bathroom and there was this boyt out there who just died laughing at me.  I never wore shorts again until I was in 7th grade.  By 9th grade, I was over 200 pounds and always 'got sick' when it came time to weigh in PE or try on the skimpy school uniforms in front of the whole class.  After that, I just kept going up.

I had RNY on June 10th and have lost about 70 pounds.  I have gone from a 26W to an 18W.  So far, I have not fought gaining.  Although I will say that a good friend of mine and I had surgery within 2 weeks of each other and I can see her weight loss MUCh more than my own.  It is sometimes hard for me to contend with.  Logically, I know that she had her surgery first, she lost more weight pre-op and she started about about 50 pounds heavier than me, but I still feel the same as I felt before.

Nancy,

I totally understand your skepticism, I did about 3 years of research before I decided to have my RNY, but I'm 6 years out and I'm very VERY glad I did it.   I wasn't a big child until I was about 6 years old, I don't know what changed in me but something definately did.  For as far back as I can remember I was always the biggest kid in my class and usually bigger than the kids the next grade up from me too.  I remember being 10 years old and being put on my first "diet".  I remember being in Jr. High and trying every diet I could find, with not much success.  I remember being in high school and being in a performance (singing) group and being weighed and measured for my dance outfit, I weighed 250lbs by then and was very very embarrased.  My folks used to promise me a new wardrobe or even a new car if I lost the weight.  I didn't get either.  I'd start off real well but wouldn't see results no matter how hard I tried so I'd give up.  In College I'd loose 60lbs and put on 70 or 80, then I'd loose another 60 and gain 70 or 80 again.  Then in my 30's I started getting all my co-morbidities and that is what finally made me realize I'd put my body through enough and went for the RNY when I was 39.  I am 6 years out and I did gain 25lbs back within the last 2 years (I've lost 6 of those so far).  All that said, I'd do it all over again, I'd crawl back to my doctor on bloody knees if needed!  I do have to watch what I eat, it would be easy to fall back into old habits, but I try to make sure to eat proteins first and then my veggies and if I have room some carbs.  I can still use my tool to this day and I really don't think I will let it get out of hand again knowing how I feel when I'm a healthy weight and what I felt like when I weighed 425 lbs (395 the day of surgery).

If you have ANY questions ask away girl!  You know we'll tell you!

(((Hugs)))
