Question for RNY'ers

I was reading in another forum and a lady said that for about 6 months after her RNY surgery she felt just awful--tired, weak, and she said it was because she was losing weight so fast.

How many of you have experienced this ?  Should I expect to be tired and dragging for a long time because of swift weight loss after RNY?

the first week I felt really bad and tired. But by week 3 I felt great. And now I have so much energy that my students wish i had not had the suregery because I work them to much. We do exercise and I also go shopping and I exercise at home. You should feel great.

It definately is different with everyone, but for me, I was tired and kinda weak feeling for about 3-4 weeks.  It got better gradually as I adjusted to the new diet.  By the time I hit the one month mark I was feeling great and was getting more energy.

Hi Nancy,
The first few weeks yes you are going to feel tired.
This is why protien is so important as your body heals.
I am not sure when it happens but before you know it as you loose weight you will find simple everyday task will get easier for you.
I feel fantastic and so grateful for my RNY.

I had tons of energy the first two weeks...the third week I returned to teaching and I am completely wiped out!!!  I find it very difficult to get up at 6:00am get my kids ready (10 month old and 4 year old), be to work by 8:00am, left work at 4:30pm, arrive home at 5:00pm, get dinner, tubbies and by 8:00pm I am just DEAD!!!
I try to think though...wouldn't this make anyone tired???

Yes, it is true.  Depending on your physiology, how much you are able to eat will determine how long and how extreme the fatigue is.

Hey Nancy...  Like everyone is saying, we're all different... But I was full of energy the first 2 weeks but tired the 3rd week.  My Doc told me to make sure to get my protein and water in and I was fine after that.

I was fatigued the first two weeks, went back to work part time on week 3, and part time was just right - I was tired by mid day.  However, I have had no problems since then.  I am 5 months out and I feel better than I have in years - BUT - I get all my vitamins and supplements in every day, I try to walk everyday and I get 80-120 grams of protein everyday, along with all the water I can hold.  So, follow the rules and you will do fine.

I have a new philosophy, I'm only going to dread one day at a time.  Charlie Brown

I agree - first 2 weeks your very tired, and I also think it has something to do with getting off all the drugs they give you for the surgery.  Then I felt great and wanted to do more than I was able to do.  At 6 months - NO Problem at all....  Still can't run a marathon or anything like that - but I can do anything a normal person can do.

I was only tired and weak feeling for about 2 weeks postop, while on liquids only.  Once I was able to eat more dense, solid proteins, my energy level began to SOAR.

Exercise and consuming all of your protein and liquids is VITAL, not to mention  your vitamin intake.  I would question constant tiredness for a 6-month period of time if you're getting in all that you're supposed to be getting in, and I would want some lab studies drawn to see what my deficiencies were.
