Hello all,

My name is Erica, I'm 22 and just had surgery July 21st. Well I'm a little over 1month post-op and I'm slightly feeling the Post-op blues unfortunaly. I am about 30lbs down since my last visit before surgery... so about 25lbs since surgery. I think im being hard on myself about my progress. My blood pressures already down, im off my diabetic medicine, blood pressure meds and other things. These are all wonderful things.

However, i have began to eat more normal foods.. veggies, fruits, pasta, etc, nothing honestly really bothers me other then one day I ate a Chickfila nugget and that didnt go too well. I just have problems with beef.. i had excruciating pain one day when my body was tryin to digest it. So beef is a no-go for a while.

Anyways, my doctor wasnt too concerned just yet with getting in protein just yet, he wanted me to stay hydrated at first. However, I have not as much energy as I'd like. I think I need to start with the protein shakes or what not.. And as far as vitamins goes.. I've been slacking on those. I was still sick up untill about two weeks ago.  So I was afraid to take the big horse-pill vitamins just yet and I  thought crushing them up would get me sick. So.. can any of you help me out there? Whats a good way to get started on the protein shakes or other protein stuff? Any suggestions for helping me get in my vitamins? I feel like im slacking on myself because I'm not getting the protein I need or vitamins. :(   Thankyou all.

Hi Erica:

Ok, I know you sound like you are struggling a bit here and that is alright. I do want to say that this all will pass and pretty soon it will feel more normal with your new pouch and new way of life.

I would say that you need to get on some type of schedule with vitamins and all. They are VERY important. Pick a time of the day and place to put them so that you will remember them all the time.

The protein is something that for the very first months was the only food item that I had room for. So it should be something you eat first and then if you have room add something else. It is difficult in the first few months to relearn what you have done for years but it will get easier day by day. I used the protein bullets 1/2 at each sitting. The rest was meats mainly.

Hang in there! This will get better!

Hi Erica,

I'm sorry that you are struggling. I know that I had mini 'meltdowns' at about 10 days and again at about 4 weeks... you can read more about it on my profile if you like. I really think that the early part of this journey is like shooting the rapids and just have to hang on and trust you'll come through on the other side ... and you will ... and when you do, you are going to find a new you.

As Lisa said, do the best you can to get your hydration, protien and vitamins in. Hydration is important because you body just can't/won't function without it. Protien is important because you need it to heal and it actually uses more calories to process than carbs or fat. Vitamin supplements are important because you aren't taking in a balanced diet and even if you are if  you have had a malabsorbtive procedure then you will never be able to absorb some key nutrients as fully and effectively as you did before.

Chicken, beef and other things will come easier with time. Just be gentle with yourself.

Hang in there,

Barb
