worry about choosing right program Hickory vs Mission
I am looking at getting the lap band. I have went to the information session at Mission. Did not feel comfortable with them. I was also worried that I could not lose the 5 percent body weight that they require you to lose. I have PCOS and it has been difficult for me to lose weight. I have been on metformin for 2 years now. When I first went on metformin I lost 15-20 lbs and then I stopped. IF I could lose on my own then I wouldn't need the lap band.
I do worry that what if I get a fill and then start to hurt really bad. I mostly live alone so I wouldn't have anyone to drive me. I wonder if the MD's at Mission would see me if I got to really hurting.
I really like the staff at Hickory. They are really friendly. The Mission program staff was okay friendly but they did not seem comfortable in the information session.
Has anyone else had that concern with having the lap band done with a doctor far away? Help

Tamara,
I went to Hickory and loved the staff. I think this is something you will have to discuss with the doctor in Hickory.
Of course, any ER would see you if you were hurting and having a complication regardless of whether it is related to the band or your prior history.
Do you have an appt. yet? with either group?

Tamara, I have heard mixed reviews about Mission also and even my PCP today said that she has as well. I am so glad to have chosen Hickory Surgical. Dr. Cook is one of the top in the field and Dr. Cox seems to be right on his heel. The staff I met at the support group last week is sooo friendly and helpful. When calling to deal with the Mission staff, I felt like a number...almost a bother. The hour + drive didn't appeal to me, but I think it will definitely be worth the trade-off. (But do note, I don't have a choice financially because we have BCBSNC, so I'm fortunate I feel this way about Hickory vs. Mission!) Have you scheduled an orientation session with Hickory? You might want to do that before making a decision! I don't know about whether the dr.'s at Mission would see you if you've had the surgery at Hickory. Someone else may be able to better answer that for you. Best wishes to you on coming to a decision you are happy and comfortable with!
Hey, Tamara - I know nothing about Hickory, but apparently they have a great program there. I am starting over again (new city) at Mission and my new Dr./surgeon is Peeter Soosar. I've been very impressed with him - he's very direct and has taken the time to really talk with me (particularly since I've had trouble with the band in the past). I have to admit, it took a while to get the responses from the Mission bariatric program, but I did eventually get established with them. I understand the feeling like a number, but I think that's true for most larger cities and hospitals.
I'm not defending, I'm new to the program too. It's obviously most important for you to find the place where you feel the best. Sounds like you've already made your choice. Best of luck to you!
